"Carlos Ortiz, bleeding from both brows, rose from the canvas in the 9th round and managed to salvage an unpopular, unanimous 10 round decision over Paolo Rosi in their TV fight at MSG Saturday night for the right to a shot at the lightweight crown. Puerto Rico born Ortiz of New York appeared to have an easy contest on his hands because 33 year old Rosi could not find the range and was missing with his Sunday punches. But, after the 4th round, Rosi improved his accuracy and threatened not only to beat 25 year old Ortiz but to knock him out. Rosi scored the only knockdown of the bout when he lifted Ortiz off the floor with a left hook in the 9th round and deposited him on the seat of his trunks on the canvas, badly hurt. Ortiz lurched to his feet immediately; but took the mandatory eight count in woozy fashion." - United Press International

*Unofficial UPI scorecard - 6-4 Ortiz
*Unofficial AP scorecard - 5-4-1 Ortiz
*A poll of 15 ringside reporters had it 9 for Ortiz, 4 for Rosi and 2 had it Even.

"Paolo Rosi, the 28 year old Italian immigrant from the Bronx, splintered Henry (Toothpick) Brown in the 8th round of a nationally televised bout last night at Capitol Arena. The explosion earned him consideration for a place among the ranking lightweights. The 23 year old Philadelphian hadn't lost a fight since 1954 until he got in the way of Rosi's gloves. In two previous appearances this year, Toothpick scored 1st round knockouts. Rosi, however, was a different proposition. After belting his man with long lefts to the head and rights to the body in the earlier sessions, Rosi floored Brown twice for nine-counts in the 8th round with hard rights to the jaw. Referee Harry Volkman called it quits after Brown struggled to his feet for the second time with 48 seconds left in the round." -Associated Press
Napoles started off aggressively and landed some strong body punches and a jolting left hook to the Briton's jaw in the 3rd round. The crowd of about 6,000 cheered as Charles landed some good combinations in the 4th. In the 5th, Napoles appeared to be slowing down as Charles kept the champion at bay. "Jose Napoles, the welterweight champion, knocked out Jean Josselin of France in the 5th round of a four-bout international show. Napoles, almost six pounds over the welterweight limit at 152 3/4, looked a little fat around the middle, but after a slow start he began to look like a champion. Josselin, who said he had never been knocked down, was once within a few points of winning the 147 pound crown. He fought Napoles on even terms for two rounds, then began to lose ground in the 3rd and 4th as Napoles picked holes in the Frenchman's defense. The end came suddenly. Napoles launched a left hook as Josselin stepped forward. It caught Josselin on the chin and he dropped to the canvas. There was no need for referee Chuck Hassett to count. Josselin was out cold." -Ring Magazine, December 1971 issue

*Although the accompanying article stated that Josselin fought a close fight for the world title and had never been down, Josselin, in fact, lost a wide decision to Curtis Cokes for the world crown in '66 and was dropped by Cokes a number of times in their '68 non-title rematch.
*This non-title bout shared the bill with two 12 rounders between Fernando Cabanela v Halimi Gutierrez, Chucho Castillo v Rafael Harrera and a non-title 10 rounder between Ruben Olivares v Valentin Galeano.
"Welterweight champion of the world, Jose 'Mantequilla' Napoles, put the coup de grace on David 'Toro' Melendez of Puerto Rico in the 5th of a scheduled non-title 10 rounder. It was not much of a fight. Napoles had too many guns for Melendez. By the end of the 2nd round, there was no doubt as to who would win. Melendez was game, but gameness is not nearly enough when fighting a champion." -Ring Magazine, December 1971 issue

"In a tremendous upset, after a short, murderously bloody brawl, Billy Backus of Canastota last night became welterweight champion of the world. With both fighters streaming blood from cuts beside both eyes, Backus sliced a deep gash above the left eye of champion Jose Napoles, and, when Syracuse referee Jack Milicich judged that Napoles couldn't see from that eye, he stopped the War Memorial fight. The end, a TKO, came after one minute of the 4th round of the scheduled 15 rounder. Napoles was much the superior fighter in the first two rounds, repeatedly beating Backus to the punch. The 3rd round was one of the most exciting three minute sessions ever seen here, as the two stood toe-to-toe and slugged it out, with Backus showing by far the greatest punching power he has demonstrated since he moved into welterweight contention. Both fighters needed after-round repairs to both eyes, but Backus quickly opened a new cut on Napoles' left eyelid, and Milicich, with outside-the-ring approval from Dr. John Sinoatti, stopped the bout as wild jubilation ensued." -Syracuse Post-Standard

*Although the promotion realized app. $46,000 from the gate, Backus, who was to receive 18% of the gate, received nothing as the Syracuse Boxing Club was in the red, having to pay Napoles his guarantee of $62,000. Moreover, Napoles was the only fighter on the card to gain a percentage from the closed circuit TV broadcasts to the west coast and to Mexico.

* "Napoles was hitting him often with that left hand in the first two rounds and I told Billy to stay away from it and come in from a different angle. And when he did it, he got in those good shots that won it. He cut him with those double-hooks." -Backus' co-trainer and uncle Carmen Basilio

* "He is a strong fighter and used his head well." -Jose Napoles, claiming that his cuts were caused by butts.

"Johnny Persol won an upset, but unanimous decision over former light heavyweight champion Harold Johnson in a lively 10 rounder at the Garden Friday night. Johnson, slow and ring rusty, was making his first start in 20 months. He missed often and was tagged by lead right hands to the head in the first half of the fight. This showed he was off form. But he rallied strongly in the second half and almost pulled out a victory. There were no knockdowns but it was an exciting fight all the way with Johnson going to the unusual extreme - for him - of trading often with his younger and faster rival from New York." Associated Press
"Making his first start in 14 months, following his recovery from a gun-shot wound, the 'Big Cat,' Cleveland Williams, needed less than a round to dispose of Ben Black of Chicago before a surprisingly large crowd. Black, ten years younger than his 32 year old opponent, tore into Cleve at the opening bell and battered him with both hands. Williams rode out the onslaught and launched a counter-attack of his own and quickly nailed Black with a left hook that spun him into the ropes; then a powerful right dropped him. Ben was still on the floor when referee Jimmy Webb reached ten, but as he was getting up and appeared to be clear-headed, Webb allowed the fight to continue. There are few heavyweights who have the finishing qualities of Williams and he wasted little time and few punches on Black. A left-right-left combo to the head spilled him again and this time the count was completed before he was able to stagger to his feet.

Harold Johnson, the No. 1 light heavyweight contender, entered his fight against Julio Mederos as a 2-1 betting favorite. Shortly before the bout, the odds favoring Johnson had been 4-1. Five months earlier, Johnson had defeated Mederos by a ten-round unanimous decision.

Johnson stumbled entering the ring, but it was thought he tripped over a rope. He danced around in the first round, hitting Mederos with a sharp left jab. Mederosa caught him with a solid right to the chin just before the bell, and Johnson staggered to his corner. In the second round, Johnson continued to jab and move until he suddenly fell to his knees without being hit. When he regained his feet, Mederosa moved in for the finish but didn't appear to land any damaging punches. At the end of the round, Johnson staggered to his corner and had trouble finding the stool. Shortly after sitting down, he collapsed onto the canvas. Johnson was carried from the ring on a stretcher.

A trace of a barbiturate was found in a urinalysis performed on Johnson at Hahnemann Hospital. Pennsylvania Governor George M. Leader said a report by Dr. Alfred S. Ivella, the commission's physician, and several specialists who examined Johnson "show they are of the unanimous opinion that a barbiturate was administered to Harold Johnson prior to his scheduled boxing match with Julio Mederos." Based on the report, Leader suspended boxing in Pennsylvania for 90 days and instructed the commission to launch a probe during the 90-day period. The suspension went into effect on May 11, but didn't apply to bouts that were already scheduled. As the commission probed the charges, the ban was extended pending new regulations to tighten control over the sport. The suspension lasted 114 days.

Clarence Davidson, Johnson's trainer, said his fighter began acting "queer" in his dressing room after taking a bite of an orange, which Johnson complained tasted "bitter." He said Johnson staggered about the dressing room but claimed he felt fine before entering the ring. A chemical analysis of a piece of the orange found in his dressing room after the fight showed no trace of a drug or barbiturate.

Lie detector tests on Johnson and others substantiated their stories. Johnson testified before the commission that he didn't know how, or if, he had been drugged. He said the orange was probably the source of his illness and claimed the orange had been given to him on the afternoon of the fight outside the commission's office by a stranger who said he was a "long-time admirer." He also testified that Louis Saccaroma, one of Mederos' three managers, was in his dressing room shortly before the fight. Saccaroma, identified by Pennsylvania police as a narcotics convict, denied Johnson's statement, saying he was at his home the night of the bout.

After a nine-day hearing, the commission ruled that Johnson knew he was not in condition to fight and failed to report that fact to commission officials on duty that night. Johnson was suspended for six months and his purse of $4,113.33 was forfeited. Johnson's trainer, Clarence Davidson, and his manager, Thomas Loughrey, also received six-month suspensions.

The probe never did uncover who drugged Johnson or how the drug was administered.

According to the Cyber Boxing Zone, the verdict was later changed from a technical knockout to a no contest.

*Aside from Johnson, Davidson and Loughrey incurring 6 month suspensions, Louis Gross, another of Johnson's seconds saw a similar suspension. Also, the matchmaker and promoter's license of Pete Moran was revoked for the same time period.
*The Pennsylvania Athletic Commission's official finding stated that Johnson acted "against the best interests of boxing" by failing to report prior to the fight that he was ill.

*World Boxing Association Heavyweight Title (1st defense by Terrell)<br>

Terrell Unanimous Heavy Winner<br>
<small>Associated Press, November 2, 1965</small>

Ernie Terrell still is a champion but the crown which sits atop his 6-foot-6 frame still doesn't make him the big man in the world of heavyweight boxing. He knows this.

Terrell won a unanimous 15-round decision over George Chuvalo Monday night to remain champion. But he still is only champion of the World Boxing Association, not of the world.

The man recognized by everyone but the WBA as king of the heavyweights—Cassius Clay—puts his share of the title on the line against Floyd Patterson Nov. 22 in Las Vegas.

Terrell was not a picture of jubilation in his dressing room after making the first defense of the title he won by outpointing Eddie Machen in Chicago last March 5.

"Everyone has always made fun of me, mostly because I'm a singer as well as a fighter," said the champion, who also is head of a musical combo. "I don't know why people get this laughing image of me."

His victory over Chuvalo probably won't change Terrell's public image immediately, but it could do so indirectly because it puts him in line for a shot at the winner of the Clay-Patterson fight—a fight which would give boxing a single heavyweight champion again.

The WBA threw the heavyweight division into its present Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde state by stripping Clay of his crown for signing a return bout contract with Sonny Liston before their first fight in 1964.

Terrell, 26, hardly used his right hand at all in defeating the plodding, two-fisted Canadian.

The Chicagoan, who had a seven-inch advantage reach, threw stinging left hand punches to Chuvalo's face almost from the opening bell until the final gong.

Although there were no knockdowns, Terrell, who weighed 206, drew blood from Chuvalo's nose and cut him about both eyes.

The Canadian, who weighed 209, required 10 stitches to close two five-inch cuts over his left eye.

Referee Sammy Luftsprihg scored it 72-65, judge Fred Nobert called it 73-65, and judge Jackie Burke made it 69-65 for Terrell.

The fight was scored under the five-point-must system, in which the winner of a round receives five points and the loser four or less.

The action didn't end with the fight.

Terrell accused Chuvalo of repeated fouling. He pointed to an inch-long gash in his left eyebrow and he said it was caused by butting. He also said Chuvalo kept stepping on his feet.

The referee warned Chuvalo for butting and Terrell for thumbing in the eighth round.

Chuvalo was bitter about the outcome and said he was "willing to go to the Supreme Court (of Canada)" to protest the decision.

"I can expect a bad decision anywhere else, but not in my home town," said the 28-year-old Chuvalo, who spent 45 minutes behind the locked door of his dressing room shouting at his manager, Irving Ungerman, and his trainer, Bernie Glickman.

He blamed Ungerman for agreeing to fight in Toronto, saying the bout should have been elsewhere.

A crowd of 12,500 at Maple Leaf Gardens paid $124,456.50 to see Terrell win his 14th straight fight. His record is 38-4. Chuvalo's record is 33-10-4.

*Terrell was guaranteed $45,000 or 35% of the live gate (whichever was higher), while Chuvalo too was guaranteed $45,000, but against 25% of the live gate.
*Unofficial UPI scorecard - 71-67 Terrell
Peralta broke up a tight battle, fought mostly at close range, by sweeping the 5th, 6th and 7th rounds. "Tony Alongi can thank referee Cy Gottfied for his disputed decision over Canandian George Chuvalo in their bristling 10 round fight Friday night. Gottfried, who earlier had warned Chuvalo, took away the last round from the Toronto slugger and gave the decision to Alongi 95-93. Judge Jim Ruby also saw it for Alongi, by the same score, while Judge Bunny Lovett saw Chuvalo the winner 99-93. So did at least half the 2,240 ringside spectators, who burst into a storm of boos when the decision went to Alongi. Alongi, 6'5", weighed in at 204 and he needed every ounce to withstand the bull-like power of Chuvalo, and the slamming rights and lefts to the body and head. Chuvalo, 209 and standing just over six feet, never took a backward step and in the 3rd he floored Alongi with a vicious left and a right to the head. Chuvalo failed to follow up his advantage." -Associated Press
A left, right, and another right knocked Calhoun down in the 4th round for a nine-count. Calhoun went right back into action with Giardello following the knockdown, as Giardello was able to stagger him twice more in the 4th round with left hooks. Calhoun did not appear to have recovered in the 5th round, and he was dropped again for a five-count by a right hand counter. Giardello was in complete control thereafter, opting to counter punch off the punches thrown by Calhoun.

*Unofficial AP scorecard - 97-91 Giardello
*The Hayward Daily Review stated that there was an attendance of 11,000 at the Cow Palace rather than the 8,891 reported by the Oakland Tribune. The disparity in attendance figures could possibly be due to the fact that customers threatened to breakdown the turnstiles when there were no more $2.50 cheap seats available, so the promoters offered $1.50 SRO to the customers.
Jones had a difficult time fighting against Niblett's clowning and unorthodox style which found Niblett walking around the ring acting groggy and almost daring Jones to come in.
