'''Rocky Marciano''' was born Rocco Francis Marchegiano on September 1, 1923, in Brockton, Massachusetts. Marciano was [[World Heavyweight Champion]] from 1952 to 1956, and he is the only World Heavyweight Champion to permanently retire undefeated.

Marciano was the first of six children born to Perrino and Pasqualena Marchegiano. Before dropping out of high school to make a few bucks — as a gardener, delivery boy, laborer for the gas company and leather tanner at the shoe factory where his father worked — he starred in football and baseball. In 1947, Marciano had a tryout with the Chicago Cubs as a catcher but was let go because he couldn't make the throw from home plate to second base with accuracy.

Marciano didn't take up boxing until after he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He took up the sport mainly as a way to avoid KP duty (assisting the cooks) and other less desirable activities, but he showed a natural ability and fought as an amateur following his discharge in 1946.

After being discharged, Marciano visited an old Army buddy, Joe Sarelli, in Chicago. Sarelli's father, who was connected to the fight game, agreed to assess Marciano's potential as a fighter. "His father took me to a gym in Chicago's Loop," Marciano recalled. "For three days, I hit the big bag and the little bag. I skipped rope and shadow boxed. At the end of the workouts, Joe's father sat down with me. He told me, 'Rocky, why don't you go home and forget about being a fighter. You'll too small to be a heavyweight. You'll never make it.'"

Marciano, fighting under the name "Rocky Mack" in order to maintain his amateur standing, turned professional on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Lee Epperson|March 17, 1947]], with a third-round knockout of Lee Epperson. Marciano then returned to the amateurs, where he fought under his real name.

On March 1, 1948, at the [[New York Golden Gloves]] Tournament of Champions, Marciano was on the short end of an unpopular [[Split decision|split decision]] to [[Coley Wallace]] in what would be the last loss of his boxing career. In his last amateur fight, Marciano outpointed George McInnis to win the New England [[AAU]] Heavyweight Championship on March 22, 1948. Marciano did not move on to the nationals because of a fractured thumb. He finished his amateur career with a record of either 9-4, with 7 knockouts.

Marciano had been told that a manager based out of New York could do more for him than one in New England, so he went to New York City and met with [[Al Weill]], who had previously managed [[Lou Ambers]], [[Joey Archibald]] and [[Marty Servo]]. Weill telephoned trainer [[Charley Goldman]] and told him to set up a sparring session so they could gauge Marciano’s potential. Later that day, Marciano stepped into the ring at a [[Wikipedia:Catholic Youth Organization|CYO]] gym on 17th Street in Manhattan with a heavyweight named [[Wade Chancey]].

“Al and I often looked over green kids who thought they could become fighters,” Goldman reminisced years later. “I’ll eat my derby hat if I ever saw anyone cruder than Rocky. He was so awkward that we stood there and laughed. He didn’t stand right. He didn’t throw a punch right. He didn’t block right. He didn’t do anything right. Then he hit Chancey with a roundhouse right which nearly put a hole in the guy’s head, and I told Weill that maybe I could do something with him.”

Goldman explained to his assistant, [[Angelo Dundee]], that although Marciano lacked height and finesse, he had great punching power. Dundee said, "Charley taught the technique that if you are short, you make yourself smaller. Charley let him bend his knees to a deep knee squat. He was able to punch from that position, come straight up from the bag and hit a heck of a shot ... It was just bang-bang-bang-bang-BANG and get him outta there."

With Weill as his manager and Goldman as his trainer, Marciano, who changed his name from Marchegiano at Weill's suggestion (he said it was too hard to pronounce), won his second pro fight with a first-round knockout of Harry Bilazarian on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Harry Bilazarian|July 12, 1948]].

Weill became matchmaker for the [[International Boxing Club]] in May 1949. Since many state athletic commissions had a conflict-of-interest rule that precluded a matchmaker from managing a fighter, his stepson, Marty Weill, became Marciano's manager of record. In August 1952, Weill resigned as matchmaker and returned as Marciano's official manager.

Marciano won his first sixteen professional fights by knockout, but there were those who still didn't think much would become of him. [[Goody Petronelli]], trainer of [[Marvin Hagler]], caught one of Marciano's early fights and recalled for ''[[Sports Illustrated]]'', "I never thought he'd make it. He was too old, almost 25. He was too short, he was too light. He had no reach. Rough and tough, but no finesse."

After twenty-five straight wins, Marciano fought [[Roland LaStarza]], who was 37-0, on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Roland LaStarza|March 24, 1950]]. Marciano, a slight underdog, won by a ten-round split decision.

On [[Rocky Marciano vs. Joe Louis|October 26, 1951]], with 37 wins and 32 knockouts under his belt, Marciano faced former World Heavyweight Champion [[Joe Louis]] and knocked him out in the eighth round. Louis was his boyhood idol, and Marciano cried in Louis's dressing room after the fight.

Five fights later, on [[Jersey Joe Walcott vs. Rocky Marciano (1st meeting)|September 23, 1952]], Marciano got a shot at World Heavyweight Champion [[Jersey Joe Walcott]]. In the thirteenth round, behind on points, Marciano knocked Walcott out with a short right to the jaw to win the championship.

Marciano's first title defense was a rematch with Walcott. On [[Rocky Marciano vs. Jersey Joe Walcott (2nd meeting)|May 15, 1953]], he knocked Walcott out in the first round. Marciano's second title defense was another rematch. On [[Rocky Marciano vs. Roland LaStarza (2nd meeting)|September 24, 1953]], he knocked out Roland LaStarza in eleven rounds.

On [[Rocky Marciano vs. Ezzard Charles (1st meeting)|June 17, 1954]], Marciano defeated [[Ezzard Charles]] by a fifteen-round unanimous decision. Afterwards, Marciano said, "It was my toughest fight." Marciano fought Charles again on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Ezzard Charles (2nd meeting)|September 17, 1954]], and almost lost the championship. In the sixth round, Charles cut Marciano's nose so badly that his corner couldn't stop the bleeding. With the ring doctor watching the cut closely and considering stopping the fight, Marciano came on strong in the eighth round and knocked Charles out.

Marciano defended his title against [[Don Cockell]] on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Don Cockell|May 16, 1955]], knocking him out in nine rounds. His sixth and final title defense was against [[Archie Moore]] on [[Rocky Marciano vs. Archie Moore|September 21, 1955]]. Marciano was dropped in the second round, but he came back to knock Moore out in the ninth round.

On April 27, 1956, Marciano retired from boxing at the age of 31. "I am retiring because of my wife and baby,” Marciano said in his retirement statement. "No man can say what he will do in the future, but barring poverty, the ring has seen the last of me. I am comfortably fixed, and I am not afraid of the future."

Friends of Marciano have said his physical condition also played a part in his decision to retire. Marciano had fought with a ruptured disc in his back since August 1949 and had suffered from an arthritic right elbow since 1951.

Many believe the main reason Marciano retired was because of his relationship with manager Al Weill. In April 1956, the chief investigator for the California Governor's special committee investigating boxing accused promoter [[Jimmy Murray]] of shortchanging Marciano and Don Cockell in their title fight and paying $10,000 "on the side" to Weill. Both Murray and Weill denied the allegations. Marciano allegedly said, "I don't care what it cost me, but I will never fight for this guy [Weill] again and let him scalp me."

On August 31, 1969, one day shy of what would have been his forty-sixth birthday, Marciano boarded a small plane with the pilot and one other passenger for a flight from Chicago to a speaking engagement in Des Moines, Iowa. The plane crashed in a field near Newton, Iowa, killing all three men on board.

Marciano was survived by his wife of 19 years, Barbara, and their two children, Mary Anne and Rocco Kevin.

'''Freddie Welsh''' was a great practitioner of defensive boxing. In the ring, he was calm, elusive and a frustrating opponent for those who relied on power and aggression. He welcomed the opportunity to fight a brawler, fully confident that he would be able to out-slick him.

Born in Wales on March 5, 1886, Frederick Hall Thomas came to America as a teenager and fell in love with boxing after witnessing a workout inside a Philadelphia gym. He turned pro in 1905 and fought under the name of Freddie Welsh. He was also known as The Welsh Wizard.

Welsh never shied away from tough competition, meeting [[Benny Leonard]], [[Willie Ritchie]] and [[Ad Wolgast]] three times, and [[Packey McFarland]] twice.

A true boxing scientist, Welsh was a clever counter-puncher who believed in feinting and shifting his body to draw his opposition out of position.

He campaigned in Pennsylvania through 1906, and for a brief period in 1907 he fought a series of bouts in his birthplace of Pontypridd, Wales.

The slick boxer returned to the United States and rose to prominence in 1908 after the McFarland bouts. He lost the first contest but fought to a 25-round draw with the great McFarland in their second encounter. Welsh closed out the year with a 15-round decision win over reigning featherweight champ Abe Attell in a non-title fight. In 1909, he won the British lightweight title and in his first defense he faced Jem Driscoll, who was disqualified in the 10th round.

In 1914, Welsh won the world lightweight title by decisioning Ritchie in London. He sandwiched successful title defenses against Wolgast and Charlie White around a non-title win over Leonard. But when he met Leonard again in 1917, with the title on the line, Leonard scored a ninth-round knockout.

Among the other legends Welsh met were [[Johnny Dundee]], [[Battling Nelson]], [[Rocky Kansas]] and [[Johnny Kilbane]].

Welsh served as a lieutenant in World War I and helped disabled veterans at Walter Reed Hospital. He was discharged a captain and returned to the ring in December of 1920. He fought five times over the ensuing 16 months and retired after dropping a 10-round decision to [[Archie Walker]] in 1922.

Welsh went on to manage [[Jimmy Goodrich]], who won the New York State lightweight title left vacant by [[Benny Leonard]]. Welsh died in New York on July 29, 1927.

==Career Overview==
The only welterweight champion to ever become a successful contender in the heavyweight ranks, '''Mickey Walker''' was one of the bravest, toughest, and most popular boxers of his generation.

A rugged scrapper with little use for ring technique or proper conditioning, Walker had tremendous success with his unpolished warrior's style. A two-division champion whose title reigns spanned nine years, he defeated five Hall of Fame opponents over his sixteen year career. He also emerged victorious in ten matches against opponents who outweighed him by twenty pounds or more.

He is routinely rated by historians as one of the greatest welterweights and middleweights in history, who was also a fine performer at both light heavyweight and heavyweight. Writers of the age constantly marveled at his small stature but superhuman toughness. Hence his entirely appropriate nickname, the "Toy Bulldog."

===Welterweight===
He was born Edward Patrick Walker in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on July 13, 1901. His father was a friend of legendary bare-knuckle boxing champion [[John L. Sullivan]], and was allegedly a talented fighter in his own right, although he never fought professionally. When he learned that Mickey, as Edward was called since birth, intended to become a boxing champion like Sullivan, the senior Walker was very upset. Despite his father's objections, Mickey became a prizefighter while still a teenager, entering a local boxing competition in 1919 against a fellow by the name of Dominic Orsini. Mickey was paid ten dollars for his work. Because official boxing decisions were outlawed by New Jersey state law at the time, the fight ended in a no-decision, as did many of Mickey's early contests.

Because he had no formal boxing training, nor any amateur boxing experience, Walker was a crude sort of fighter from the start, but he packed a punch and relied upon sheer aggression to often overwhelm opponents. Losing just twice in his first forty contests, all fought in New Jersey within just over two years' time, Walker secured himself a non-title fight with reigning welterweight champion [[Jack Britton]]. On July 18, 1921, Mickey took the champion the scheduled twelve round distance, but the more experienced Britton appeared to get the better of the action. Because the fight was held in Newark, New Jersey, the official result was a "no decision," saving Walker from an official blemish on his record. Still, taking a veteran titleholder like Britton the distance was an impressive feat for an unknown kid from New Jersey who had only just passed his twentieth birthday.

Now a legitimate welterweight contender, Walker garnered fights with a range of respected contenders, securing his chance for a second shot at Britton. This time the fight took place at [[Madison Square Garden]] in New York, with the world championship on the line. On November 1, 1922, Walker scored a knockdown in the twelfth and secured himself the fifteen round decision and his first world title at the tender age of twenty-one.

Thereafter he campaigned mostly as a middleweight, only dropping back down to welterweight to make the occasional defense of his championship.

In March of 1923 he defended the title for the first time against [[Pete Latzo]] in a no-decision bout in Newark. A few months later, in his second defense, against [[Jimmy Jones]], the referee stopped the fight claiming that neither fighter was trying to win. Though Walker later claimed to have suffered hand injuries that precluded him from using his typically aggressive style, the New Jersey Commission suspended his boxing license for a year.

Thus Walker was unable to defend the championship again until June 2, 1924, when he fought future Hall of Famer [[Lew Tendler]] over ten rounds in Philadelphia. Tendler was a veteran of more than one hundred fights who had twice fought for the lightweight championship. A crafty southpaw with a decent pop in his fists, Tendler gave him plenty of trouble. Walker managed to stay far enough ahead on the score cards, however, to secure himself a unanimous decision in his favor.

A knockout of unheralded [[Bobby Barrett]] followed four months later. This continued success attracted world famous boxing manager [[Jack Kearns|Jack "Doc" Kearns]], former manager of the reigning heavyweight champion [[Jack Dempsey]]. Walker and Kearns would become great friends and rumors of their escapades bouncing from whorehouse to bar and back to the whorehouse spending Mickey's money quickly became the talk of boxing circles.

Kearns helped Walker secure two key title shots in 1925. On January 7, 1925, Walker took on Ireland's [[Mike McTigue]] for the light heavyweight championship. Amazingly, Mickey entered the ring weighing less than 150 pounds. Outweighed by more than ten pounds, he nonetheless seemed to be in control of the fight. But he was unable to knock McTigue out and the fight lasted the scheduled twelve round distance, resulting officially in a "no decision" and McTigue keeping the title.

On July 2, Walker took on middleweight champ and another future Hall of Famer [[Harry Greb]] in New York. Like Walker, Greb was an unschooled, rough-and-tumble brawler who often neglected training and was known for his wild lifestyle. ''[[The Ring Magazine|The Ring]]'' magazine still recognizes Greb, nicknamed the "Human Windmill," as the single greatest middleweight in history to this day. In front of 60,000 spectators he and Walker put on one of the fiercest and bloodiest championship battles of the century. Walker fought bravely and won several early rounds, but Greb firmly established his dominance by the closing rounds. Exhausted by his own early output and unable to compete with Harry's constant work rate and hand speed, Mickey took a terrific beating in the final minutes of the match, but managed to stay on his feet to hear the closing bell. The decision, however, went deservedly to Greb, although [[Damon Runyon]] reported this fight as being close with Walker out fighting Greb in the fifteenth. Later that night the pair ran into each other at a local pub and the fight continued in a back alley. The impetuous Walker emerged victorious by sucker punching Greb, who was still removing his coat.

Undaunted by the loss to Greb, Walker continued to defend his welterweight championship, doing so successfully against [[Dave Shade]] and [[Sailor Friedman]] before losing it to [[Pete Latzo]] on May 20, 1926. Latzo was a tough customer and a talented boxer, who used movement to confuse Mickey. Walker employed a constant body attack, but to no avail. Latzo, according to the ''New York Times'', "won decisively simple," and took a majority decision.

Just over a month later contender [[Joe Dundee]] stopped Walker on cuts in the eighth round. Dundee, according to ringside reporters, repeatedly head-butted Mickey to open the cut, but was inexplicably not punished by the referee.

===Middleweight and Light Heavyweight===
Winning his next three bouts, Walker managed to secure himself a second shot at the middleweight title, now held by [[Tiger Flowers]], who had beaten Harry Greb and become the first African American to hold the title.

This bout between two future Hall of Famers took place at the Coliseum in Chicago, Illinois, before 11,000 spectators on December 3, 1926. In the early rounds, Flowers clearly took the lead by using his superior boxing skills against Walker. Cut and bleeding badly by the fourth round, Mickey fell behind badly but continued to apply constant pressure and throw punches, most of them missing. In the final few rounds, however, the hunter finally began to get to his prey. He staggered the champion on multiple occasions and scored a flash knockdown in the ninth. Still, when referee [[Benny Yanger]], the sole judge of the fight, awarded his decision to Walker, the arena erupted with boos and accusations of a fix. The Illinois Commission investigated but could find no evidence of dishonesty in the referee, confirming Walker?s status as the new middleweight champion.

Walker defended the championship twice in the next two years, first against England's [[Tommy Milligan]] (a tenth round knockout) and Minnesota's [[Jock Malone]] (a ten round no-decision).

But he was by now eyeing bigger purses and greater challenges by making forays into the light heavyweight division. He won a 1927 rematch with [[Mike McTigue]] via first round knockout, and then battered former champion [[Paul Berlenbach]] over ten rounds just three weeks later.

On March 28, 1929, Walker took on reigning light heavyweight champ [[Tommy Loughran]] for that title at Chicago Stadium. By now all of the hard living and hard fights were getting to him, who could not compete with Loughran's combined size, speed and skills. He lost the ten round decision, but later showed some of his old form in whipping light heavyweight contender [[Leo Lomski]] and middleweight contender [[Ace Hudkins ]] (in defense of his middleweight title) in the next few months.

At the end of 1929, Mickey abandoned his middleweight championship, stating his intention to go after the biggest prize in sports, the heavyweight championship of the world.

===Heavyweight Title Campaign===
Twice beating aging heavyweight contender [[Johnny Risko]] in 1930 and 1931, Walker surprised many by establishing himself as a potential threat among the big men. Even more astonishing was his win over the monstrous [[Bearcat Wright]], who, according to one source, stood over a foot taller than Mickey and outweighed him by 100 pounds. Other sources indicate that the size differential was not quite so vast, but still considerable. He even managed to score a knockdown of Wright in route to the ten round decision, securing himself a shot at top-rated contender [[Jack Sharkey]].

Sharkey, a clever, tough future Hall of Famer, had already been in the ring with the likes of [[Harry Wills]], [[Jack Dempsey]] and [[Max Schmeling]]. When they fought on July 22, 1931, at Ebbets Field in New York, Sharkey outweighed Walker by nearly thirty pounds and stood a full five inches taller. Still, the determined Toy Bulldog put on the performance of his life, continually dogging Jack for fifteen rounds. The official result of the match was a draw, which was an impressive accomplishment for the former welterweight in itself. But many at ringside protested that Mickey deserved the decision. It was Sharkey, however, who got the title shot. Less than a year after his bout with Walker, Jack Sharkey won a fifteen round decision over Germany's Max Schmeling to win the heavyweight championship.

Sharkey's win over Schmeling had been as controversial as the draw with Walker. Thus many hankered for a showdown between Schmeling and Walker -- the two men many felt were really the best heavyweights in the world. That fight happened on September 26, 1932, at [[Madison Square Garden]]. Again Walker put on a marvelous exhibition of bravery. He took the fight to Schmeling and refused to stop punching. But Schmeling's size, punching power and counter-punching technique took their toll as the fight wore on. After failing to put the German away with a valiant last stand in the eighth round, Walker clearly had had enough. His energy sapped, he took an horrific battering, prompting many in the crowd to scream for the fight to be stopped. Manager Doc Kearns signaled the referee, who mercifully stopped the fight.

===Later Years===
After the bloody, bruising beating experienced at the hands of Schmeling, Walker was never again the same fighter. Although he knocked out the massive [[Arthur De Kuh]], who outweighed him by nearly fifty pounds, with a stunning first round knockout, Walker decided to abandon his dream of winning the heavyweight title.

He returned to the light heavyweight division, where he lost in a second go at the championship, dropping a unanimous decision to future Hall of Famer [[Maxie Rosenbloom]] in 1933. A year later he beat Rosenbloom in a non-title rematch, his final victory over a world class fighter.

After winning just two fights in 1934 and losing four, Walker retired in 1935. At the end of his career, despite being on of the most popular and successful middleweights yet to come along, he was virtually penniless, having blown his fortune on his playboy lifestyle. An unsuccessful acting career was followed by a period as a bar owner and then a traveling salesman. A talented painter and golfer, he pursued these two hobbies with great passion in his later life and died on April 21, 1981, at the age of seventy-nine. In 1990 he became part of the inaugural class of inductees into the [[International Boxing Hall of Fame]].

Dethroning a legendary heavyweight champion sometimes is not all it is cracked up to be. '''Gene Tunney''', one of the most skilled of all heavyweight champions, received little more than begrudged respect from sports fans after his two signature performances against [[Jack Dempsey]]. Fast, powerful, resilient, intelligent and virtually flawless in technique, Tunney had all the tools for greatness in the ring, but lacked the ferocious style and rugged charisma of the man from whom he wrested the championship. But even Tunney's detractors couldn't deny that he was a first class fighter, one who had risen from middleweight to heavyweight and fought a generation of quality opponents on the way. Like Dempsey, he cast his own unique shadow over the sport as an accomplished student of the sweet science and one of the greatest athletes of his generation.
===The Fighting Marine===
Born James Joseph Tunney, the son of an Irish immigrant longshoreman, Tunney grew up on the mean streets of New York City, where he learned to fight. He became affectionately known in his family as "Gene" because his baby sister had trouble pronouncing his given name. Tunney quit school when he was 15 years old and went to work as a typist for a steamship company to help support his family. It was during this period that he gravitated toward boxing, venturing nightly to the Greenwich Village Athletic Club to train, spar and make valuable connections with people involved in the sport. It soon became his ambition to compete professionally, and he made his pro debut in July 1915 as a middleweight against [[Bobby Dawson]], whom he stopped in eight rounds.

During Tunney's career, official decisions in boxing were outlawed in numerous states, including New York, as a means to avoid corrupt influences in the sport. Fans relied upon newspaper reporters to give them accurate accounts as to who deserved to win the fights. According to the International Boxing Hall of Fame, 19 of Tunney's fights officially resulted in a no-decision.

On April 6, 1917, the United States declared war on the German Empire and entered World War I. Tunney enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on May 2, 1918, 23 days before his 21st birthday. Though he never saw action during his tenure in the Marines, his enlistment would later serve as a source of patriotic pride for many fans and would become a successful promotional tool for his future career.

Tunney continued to box while he was stationed in France during the war. He won a four-round decision against [[Fighting Bob Martin]], the heavyweight champion of the American Expeditionary Forces, and defeated 20 opponents in an elimination series to win the American Expeditionary Forces light heavyweight title.

With the end of World War I in 1919, Tunney returned to civilian life. Between December 1919 and October 1920, he scored eleven consecutive knockout victories. Ten of bouts were in New Jersey and one was in New York. Although Tunney's opposition was mediocre at best, the success led to his appearance on the undercard of the highly anticipated fight between World Heavyweight Champion Jack Dempsey and World Light Heavyweight Champion [[Georges Carpentier]] at Boyle's Thirty Acres in Jersey City, New Jersey, on July 2, 1921. The fight, which attracted a crowd of more than 80,000, was boxing's first $1 million gate. Tunney's opponent was [[Soldier Jones (boxer)|Soldier Jones]], an overmatched light heavyweight whom Tunney dominated for seven rounds until the referee stopped the fight.

Another six consecutive wins led to a fight with former World Light Heavyweight Champion [[Battling Levinsky]]—Tunney's first internationally known opponent—at [[Madison Square Garden]] in New York City on January 13, 1922. Levinsky, who entered the fight as the American Light Heavyweight Champion, was a veteran of more than 200 bouts and, like Tunney, was known for his defensive skills. Tunney won by a twelve-round decision to win the American Light Heavyweight Championship, which was considered a major title at the time and greatly increased his stature within the boxing community.
===The Greb Fights===
Tunney's next fight against a big-name opponent was at Madison Square Garden on May 23, 1922, against future Hall of Fame inductee [[Harry Greb]], a rugged and relentless slugger from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Known as the "Human Windmill," Greb would later win the World Middleweight Championship. The opening ten rounds of the fight between the ultimate slugger and the ultimate boxer proved closely fought, despite Greb's constant fouling. A head-butt in round one broke Tunney's nose, understandably disrupting his concentration. Later in the round, a punch from Greb opened a gash above Tunney's left eye. In the third, a cut over the right eye opened. By the middle rounds, Tunney's face was a red mask of blood, but he continued to hold his own. As the fight entered the championship rounds, however, the effect of the punishment and blood loss on Tunney became obvious, prompting Greb to lay on even more pressure. Though Tunney never went down and lasted the entire fifteen-round distance, the judge awarded Greb the fight. Tunney, losing his American championship, had also suffered his first professional defeat. After the fight, he collapsed in his dressing room.

Left to rebuild his record in order to secure a rematch with Greb, Tunney took on the highly skilled [[Tommy Loughran]]—the future World Light Heavyweight Champion and Hall of Fame inductee—in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 24, 1922. He put Loughran down with a right hand in the first round, but Loughran rose to fight on and staggered Tunney in the third. The bout went the twelve-round scheduled distance and was ruled a no-decision. The ''Philadelphia Inquirer'' thought Loughran won the bout, while the ''Philadelphia Record'', ''Philadelphia Public Ledger'' and ''New York Times'' gave it to Tunney.

The fight against Loughran was between two fights with heavyweight [[Charley Weinert]]. The first match took place on August 17 in Newark, New Jersey, and ended in a no-decision after twelve rounds. According to all three Newark newspapers and all reporting New York City newspapers (except one), Tunney won the fight handily. The second match was held at Madison Square Garden on November 29. Tunney had an easier time in the rematch, winning by a fourth-round knockout.

After nine consecutive fights without a loss, Tunney faced Greb for a second time. Before a crowd of 15,000 at Madison Square Garden on February 23, 1923, Tunney and Greb engaged in a closely contested fight. Tunney, who utilized a punishing body attack to try and slow Greb down, was awarded a fifteen-round split decision. However, the verdict was hotly disputed. 19 of 23 newspapermen at ringside believed Greb deserved the win. A third match occurred on December 10, 1923, again at the Garden. The fight was more of the same, with Tunney going to the body and Greb brawling away. After fifteen rounds, Tunney was declared the winner by a unanimous decision. The consensus was that Tunney won 9 rounds, Greb four and two were even.

The pair met twice more. They fought a ten-round no-decision bout in Brooklyn, Ohio, on September 17, 1924. The ''New York Times'' reported that the bout was fought on "fairly even terms." The last match between Tunney and Greb took place in St. Paul, Minnesota, on March 27, 1925. Although it was officially ruled a no-decision after ten scheduled rounds, Tunney clearly got the better of the action. The Associated Press reported: "Tunney gave Greb as thorough a beating as he has ever received."
===The Road to Dempsey===
By the mid-1920s, Tunney was increasingly venturing into heavyweight territory. On June 26, 1924, he knocked out fringe contender [[Erminio Spalla]] at Yankee Stadium and then dropped back down to light heavyweight to face the aging [[Georges Carpentier]] at the Polo Grounds in New York City on July 24, 1924. Carpentier was an experienced, quick, skillful, tough and hard-hitting opponent, but he was past his prime. Tunney dominated the match, flooring the Frenchman three times in the tenth round and once in the fourteenth. In the fifteenth, the referee decided that Carpentier could take no more and stopped the contest.

On June 5, 1925, Tunney faced [[Tommy Gibbons]], who had never been knocked out. Gibbons had even gone a full fifteen rounds with the feared Dempsey just two years earlier. Although he was thought to be at the tale end of his career, Gibbons was still regarded as the first true test for Tunney in the heavyweight division. The "Fighting Marine" passed the test with flying colors, winning the fight by a twelfth-round knockout. It would be the only knockout loss for Gibbons in 106 professional fights. Tunney followed the Gibbons victory with knockout wins over heavyweights [[Jack Herman]] [[Bartley Madden]] and [[Dan O'Dowd]], and he won a 12-round [[newspaper decision]] against [[Johnny Risko]].

With Tunney now considered among the top contenders in the division, fans wanted to see him matched with African-American [[Harry Wills]], [[Ring Magazine|''The Ring'']] magazine's No. 1-rated heavyweight contender. Tunney, however, refused to participate in an interracial prizefight (a stance that detracts from his legacy in the eyes of some historians). Because Dempsey's handlers also refused to put their man in with Wills, a Dempsey-Tunney fight became the next logical match-up.
===The Dempsey Fights===
The first of the two Dempsey-Tunney fights took place on September 23, 1926, at Sesquicentennial Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was Dempsey's first professional bout in three years. In preparation, Tunney used the then-new technique of studying the films available on Dempsey to determine the champion's strengths, weaknesses and vulnerabilities.

Some 120,557 people turned out—despite a vicious rain storm—to view the much anticipated bout. They were surprised to see the underdog challenger give the highly regarded champion a boxing lesson. For ten rounds, Tunney put on a boxing clinic, never allowing Dempsey into the fight and walking away with a well-deserved 10-round unanimous decision. ''The Ring'' magazine later dubbed Tunney's win the "Upset of the Decade."

Tunney stayed out of the ring for nearly a year after winning the championship. An intelligent, well-spoken and well-read man, Tunney established friendships among some of the day's top literary figures, including author George Bernard Shaw. But the public yearned for the days when the less bookish and more brutal Dempsey held the crown. Thus promoter [[Tex Rickard]] arranged a rematch.

On September 22, 1927, almost a year to the day after their first match, Tunney did battle with Dempsey one more time at [[:File:SoldiersField27.JPG|Soldiers Field]] in Chicago, Illinois. Tunney again exhibited supreme technical skills and remarkable conditioning in continually circling Dempsey, using his jab to keep the former champion at bay and taking a clear lead on the score cards. In the seventh, a flurry of punches by Dempsey floored Tunney for the first time in his career. Under a then-new Illinois rule, a fighter scoring a knockdown had to go to the farthest neutral corner before the referee could start counting over the fallen opponent. However, Dempsey went to Tunney's corner. By the time Referee [[Dave Barry]] got Dempsey to go to a neutral corner and started his count at one, Tunney had been down for several seconds. Taking full advantage of the extra time, Tunney got up at Barry's count of nine—14 seconds after he had been dropped. Tunney later said he could have arisen at Barry's count of three, when he first looked up at the referee. Tunney survived the round and came back to score a [[flash knockdown]] against Dempsey in the eighth, dropping the former champion to one knee with a right hand. Tunney clearly won the last three rounds and retained his title with a 10-round unanimous decision. However, the "long count" tainted the fight in the minds of many fans.

Tunney was often asked if he could have survived the seventh round without the aid of a long count. Tunney always insisted that he could have arisen at Barry's count of three, when he first looked up at the referee. "When I regained consciousness after the brief period of blackout, I felt that I could have jumped up immediately and matched my legs against Jack's, just as I did," he once said.
===Retirement===
Tunney's second title defense came on July 26, 1928, against [[Tom Heeney]] of New Zealand, who had shown himself to be a viable world-class opponent through recent wins over [[Jim Maloney]], [[Johnny Risko]] and [[Jack Delaney]], as well as a draw with future World Heavyweight Champion [[Jack Sharkey]]. However, Heeney was no match for the "Fighting Marine." Even the fact that Jack Dempsey himself worked in Heeney's corner proved no help; he was outclassed from the start. In the eleventh round, the referee decided that the challenger could take no more and stopped the fight. For his win against Heeney, Tunney was given the inaugural [[Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year|''Ring'' magazine Fighter of the Year]] award.

Five days after the Heeney fight, Tunney announced his retirement from boxing. "There is no contender at the present time who appears capable of attracting real public interest," he said. "If there were I might delay my retirement long enough to face him in the ring, but it looks as if it might take two or three years before a dangerous opponent is developed. That is too long to stand and wait."

Although they had never truly embraced Tunney, the public was nonetheless stunned; no heavyweight champion had permanently retired with the title. Undefeated as a heavyweight, with only one pro loss, Tunney cut his losses and walked away for good with a record of 79-1-4 (50 KO) with 1 no contest.

Following his boxing career, Tunney embarked upon an immensely fruitful career in business and real estate. A chairman or director of several companies and corporations, Tunney made millions after leaving the sport. He passed away an enormously wealthy man at age 81 on November 7, 1978. "I feel like a part of me is gone," Dempsey said when his former foe died. "As long as Gene was alive, I felt we shared a link with that wonderful period of the past. Now I feel alone."

Tunney wrote two autobiographies: ''A Man Must Fight'' in 1932 and ''Arms for Living'' in 1941.

Tunney was inducted into the [[Ring Magazine's Boxing Hall of Fame|''The Ring'' magazine's Boxing Hall of Fame]] in 1955. He was honored as one of the inaugural inductees into the [[World Boxing Hall of Fame]] in 1980 and as an inaugural inductee into the [[International Boxing Hall of Fame]] in 1990. And, in 2001, Tunney was an inductee into the [[United States Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame]].

In March 2011, the Tunney family donated to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History several objects from his career, including the boxing gloves he had worn during the infamous "Long Count" fight. "The Tunney family is honored that this museum, so much a part of our national heritage, will become the permanent home of a pair of brown, leather boxing gloves worn in one of my father’s—indeed one of the 20th century’s—most historic fights," said Jay Tunney, the late champion's youngest son. "He would be immensely proud, as we are."

==Family==
Tunney married [[Polly Lauder Tunney|Mary Josephine (Polly) Lauder]] in Rome, Italy, on October 3, 1928. Lauder was a Connecticut socialite and Carnegie Steel Company heiress. The Tunneys would have four children: Gene L. (1931-2009), [[Wikipedia:John V. Tunney|John V.]] (born 1934), Jonathon R. "Jay" (born 1936) and Joan (1939-2008).

Representing the state of California, John V. served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1965 to 1971 and the U.S. Senate from 1971 to 1977.

In August 1969, Joan was reported missing in Norway. She was found alive two months later in a French hospital suffering from amnesia. The following May, she was charged with murdering her husband, Lynn Carter Wilkinson, in England. A psychiatrist told the court that she had suffered from schizophrenia for nine years. Joan pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and was committed to a mental hospital.

In 2010, Jay Tunney wrote a book chronicling the relationship between his father and George Bernard Shaw titled ''The Prizefighter and the Playwright''.
