'''Edwin "Dynamite" Valero''' started boxing at around age 12, compiling a reported amateur record of 86-6 with 45 kayos. (after his second pro fight Valero confirmed his record: "Soy estilista y tambien pego duro. En amateur gane 86 peleas y propino 45 nocauts".) He was Venezuelan amateur champion three years running, as well as Central and South American champion (beating [[Francisco Bojado]], July 13, 2000).

Prior to turning pro, on February 5, 2001, Valero was in a severe motorcycle accident, in which he fractured his skull, forcing surgery to remove a blood clot.

Valero claims that his Venezuelan doctor cleared him to fight on January 17, 2002 and he turned pro that July with a first-round kayo. After posting a record of 11-0 (11 first round knockouts), Valero ran into licensing trouble. In January 2004 he failed an MRI in New York and thus was denied a license, effectively banning him from fighting in the United States.

On March 19, 2008, however, Texas granted him a license.

In 2006, Valero scored his 17th consecutive first-round win, eclipsing the undocumented 100-year-old record established by [[Young Otto]] in 1906, who reportedly won 16 straight boxing matches by first round knockout. "In my matches, I focus on winning, but I'm not going for knockouts," said Valero. In March 2006, Valero's streak was snapped in his 19th bout when he stopped his foe in the second. Since that time, [[Tyrone Brunson]] broke Valero's record by scoring 19 straight first-round wins.

On September 4, 2008, Valero gave up his WBA super featherweight title and moved to lightweight.

On Sunday April 18, 2010, Valero's career likely came to an end after being arrested for murdering his wife. Within hours, Valero admitted guilt.

The CAM Heavyweight Title belt was up for stakes next as Canada’s Shane “ Kid Thunder” Suttcliffe, ( 25-14-1, 15 ko’s) challenged Denver, Colorado’s Louis Monaco, a veteran of 44 fights, with a sub 500 record, for the vacant title. Monaco was in charge of the 10 round fight throughout, as he relied entirely on a hard body attack for 3 rounds before switching to Suttcliffe’s head. Suttcliffe, a former Canadien Heavyweight Champion, had his moments when he used a double jab and movement, but his legs failed him late leaving him nothing more then batting practice for the charging Monaco who opened cuts over and under suttcliffe’s left eye.Final scores were 96-94,98-92,99-91 for Monaco, who along with his Trainer of 10 years Jimmy Smith, were elated after the fight. “ This guy has worked hard for a long time, never turning down a fight, and he deserved this win.”said Smith. Monaco added, “ When I saw he wasn’t taking advantage of his weight advantage, ( approx 40 lbs.) I knew I could outwork him inside to the body until I start going upstairs.”

Smitty continues to be a corner stone of the boxing scene here in Colorado. His monthly cards have given many fighters their chance in boxing. For some it is the chance to live a dream. For others it can be a way to help make ends meet. I have seen many of Colorado's best fighters debut on his cards. And if you are a boxer in Colorado, chances are you have fought on a card that Smitty has promoted at one time or another. I believe his honesty, attitude and professional approach to the sport carry him along way. He is a straight up kinda guy who is true to his word and he works with everyone, which is very admirable. Even more admirable is the reason by it. He puts his fighters first, not letting his own interests or issues stand in the way of his fighter's success, or payday. He has been training Louis Monaco for quite some time, they have nearly ten years together I believe. Monaco has been in with many of the heavyweight division's biggest names from Butterbean to Buster Douglas, he has seen some good and bad times. He always comes to fight and gives his best regardless of the outcome or odds. He beat Peter McNeeley and Michael Dokes and lost to current champions Vitaly Klitschko and Lamon Brewster. He is a true journey man fighter. And speaking of journey man, you should follow Smitty around for a month or so, see if you can keep up with the 'old man'. Smitty had his own card scheduled Sunday but still took Monaco to Billings, Montana Saturday night. You see he had a title shot. Monaco won the Canadian-American-Mexican belt in a battle with Shane Sutcliffe. That team work and Smitty's selflessness is what got them there. I know some may see that as very insignificant. On a national or world scale, maybe it is, to some degree. But to see how proudly Smitty smiled and to see Louis Monaco holding his head high like the champion he is, shows me the real significance.
