Professional Career
Acelino Freitas is a native of Bahia, Brazil. He is a former junior lightweight and lightweight champion.

His nickname is "Popo" -- given to him by his mother, after the sound that babies make while drinking milk.

Freitas had a difficult childhood, often sleeping on a sandy floor at his house. Early on, he dreamed of a better place to live for his family. Although a skilled football player, he was more inclined towards the sport of boxing since an early age. Brazil's Eder Jofre, who is generally recognized as the greatest world champion to come out of that country, was one of Freitas's childhood heroes.

Freitas was a silver medalist at the 1995 Pan American Games. Freitas then became a professional boxer on July 14, 1995 against Jose Adriano Soares. With his win by knockout in the first round that night, Freitas set off a streak of 29 knockout wins in a row, which is one of the longest knockout win streaks in boxing history. His first eleven wins were against low level competition, but for his twelfth fight he took on the much more experienced Edwin Vazquez, knocking him out in the seventh round.

Between 1997 and 1998, Freitas won four more fights and then took on Francisco Tomas Da Cruz, a former world title challenger of Julio Cesar Chavez. Freitas handled Da Cruz with a knockout in two rounds and then added three more knockout wins before getting his first world title shot. That happened on August 7, 1999, when he challenged WBO junior lightweight champion Anatoly Alexandrov. Freitas became the world champion by knocking Alexandrov out in round one. Soon after, he signed a contract with Cable TV giant Showtime, which began to telecast Freitas's fights throughout the United States. Freitas then made five defenses of his world title and one non-title bout, all of which ended in knockout wins. Then he went to London, and took only 45 seconds to beat Daniel Alicea (a former world title challenger of Naseem Hamed) in another non-title affair.

Freitas then beat the former world champion Alfred Kotey, brother of David Kotey, by a decision in ten rounds before deciding to sign for a unification bout with the WBA world champion, Joel Casamayor, a Cuban refugee who resided in Florida. Freitas dropped Casamayor in round two and went on to add the WBA belt to the WBO one he already had by beating Casamayor by a close but 12 round unanimous decision on January 12, 2002. Next, he went to Phoenix, Arizona, to fight Nigeria's Daniel Attah. Freitas kept his world title with a 12 round unanimous decision on August 3.

Freitas was able to reach his dream of buying his family a better place to live. He has become a national hero in Brazil, one that evokes memories of the idolatry many Brazilians felt for Freitas's childhood hero, Jofre. Because of that, he has become a campaign spokesman for many companies, to add extra income to what he already earns from his world title fights. He has been able to buy mansions for his family, and he built a soccer field in his own mansion, which allows him to practice his second favorite sport.

This avid autograph signer's fame in Brazil has reached such proportions, that when he got married, his wedding was televised live to all of Brazil, and it broke the all-time audience record for a live event in Brazil.

Freitas retained his world title in Chicago with a fourth-round knockout of Juan Carlos Ramirez. Then, on August 9, 2003, he and Jorge Rodrigo Barrios engaged in what Showtime commentator Steve Albert called a "candidate for fight of the year. "Freitas was floored in rounds eight and eleven, but retaliated with a knockdown of his own towards the end of the eleventh, and ended up retaining the title by knockout in round twelve.

Freitas's personal life took a downturn that year, however, when he divorced the girl that he married on that televised wedding. Their divorce was very public in Brazil.

Freitas began 2004 by winning a 12 round unanimous decision over Artur Grigorian on January 4, to become the WBO's lightweight champion.

On February 1 of that year, the WBA announced it had named Freitas their 2003 "Fighter of the Year."

On August 7, 2004, Freitas was defeated for the first time, losing his WBO lightweight title to Diego Corrales by a tenth round knockout in Connecticut. Freitas quit the fight in that round after taking a severe beating, and has been scorned in the boxing community because of it.

On April 29, 2006, Freitas won a split decision over Zahir Raheem, to capture the vacant WBO lightweight title. He announced his retirement from the sport on October 4, 2006. On April 28, 2007, Freitas returned to boxing to engage in a WBA-WBO lightweight unification bout with Juan Diaz, but once again quit on his stool after the eighth round.

His record consists of 40 wins and two losses, with 34 wins by knockout.

Trainer: Peter Manfredo<br>
<br clear=all>

Peter Manfredo Sr. decided, in September of 2000, it was time for his son to step into the ring for the first time as a professional, after having a stellar amateur career of 154 wins and fewer than 30 losses. Peter Manfredo Jr, perhaps best-known as a contestant on the NBC boxing reality television show The Contender, was to be promoted by Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Entertainment & Sports. He scored four knockdowns in his debut as a middleweight and went on to win a lopsided decision over fellow prospect Steve Garrett. After five pro fights, Manfredo got a taste of the big time as he fought his in first nationally televised bout in August of 2001 on ESPN2's ESPN Friday Night Fights. The scheduled six-rounder against Rhon Roberts (8-2, of Guyana) was reduced to four in order to accommodate ESPN. The two round decrease proved to be a blessing in disguise for Manfredo, considering that he had expended a ton of nervous energy in the dressing room before-hand. However, he went on to dominate Roberts and garnered a unanimous decision victory.

After another unanimous decision win, Manfredo (8-0, 4 KOs), was beginning to make some noise as a New England Middleweight prospect. An opportunity arose for Manfredo to fight again on an ESPN2 Friday Night Fights show promoted by Sugar Ray Leonard, at Foxwoods Casino in CT. He took the fight on a few days notice after a CES stablemate pulled off the card due to an injury. The fight was the second time Manfredo had fought on ESPN2 but, unfortunately, the contract weight was higher than what he had previously fought at. His opponent was slick, awkward southpaw Ian "The Truth" Gardener. The Canadian, who had a record of 2-0, and was 6' 1", gave the 5' 9" Manfredo trouble with his continuous slapping and holding. Manfredo would eke out a split decision victory, hence the only fight that he has failed to dominate in his 14 bouts to that date as a pro.

After a knockout victory over Kenny Stubbs, a tough veteran from the Bahamas, Manfredo had an unblemished record of 10-0 (5 KOs). Following the win over Stubbs, Manfredo made a decision that seems to have propelled his career to new heights. Sitting on his stool in his dressing room, he proclaimed that this fight would be the last that he would be weighing-in over 160 lbs. His last three fights had been against fighters who stood 6'1 or 6'2 and Manfredo knew that a change had to be made.

True to his words, Manfredo put his unbeaten record on the line against former title challenger John "Lennox" Lewis, 10-5-1, of Trinidad and Tobago. The fight took place at the Mohegan Sun Casino in CT, and was part of another ESPN2 card promoted by Jimmy Burchfield. The scheduled six-rounder was again shortened by two rounds. This time it was because of a curfew for the fight card that had been laid down by the casino. The change didn't seem to bother Manfredo, as he unleashed a brutal body attack that had Lewis hurt on numerous occasions. Despite not being able to drop his opponent, Manfredo won a unanimous decision.

After the win over Lewis, he started his downward spiral toward the Junior Middleweight class. His next fight was to be on the undercard of the world title bout between Vinny Paz and Eric Lucas. Manfredo took on tough South Boston veteran Tommy Attardo, 9-6-1. The bout was part of the televised undercard and proved to be Manfredo's best performance to date. After weighing in at a career low 155 lbs, he used his superior hand and foot speed to overmatch Attardo. After dropping his opponent once, he went on to win a lopsided decision. Manfredo was so impressive that night it prompted representatives from Main Events to invite him to train with Junior Middleweight World Champ "Ferocious" Fernando Vargas in Big Bear, CA, as he prepared for his May title fight with Oscar De La Hoya. He sparred six times with Vargas over a two week span, gaining invaluable experience from being in the ring with a world class fighter.

Manfredo, then 12-0 (5 KOs), took another step up in his next fight at Foxwoods Casino. The fight was televised by NESN and was against Grady Brewer, 10-3 (7 KOs), from Lawton, Oklahoma. Brewer was the Texas Miller Lite Champion, but on this night he was outclassed by the younger Manfredo. There were no knockdowns in the fight but plenty of action. Manfredo won a unanimous decision while going eight rounds for the first time in his career.

With a record of 13-0, Manfredo was ready for his first title bout. The vacant Eastern Boxing Association Title would be on the line in a 10-round bout at the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston, RI. His opponent would be the tough veteran from Baltimore, MD, Mike McFail, 11-9 (3 KOs), who came into the fight with the idea of taking the EBA belt back to the D.C. area. Manfredo had other plans, as he landed a straight right hand on McFail's chin in the first round that sent him to the canvas. McFail would get up but only to absorb a thorough beating until the referee mercifully put a halt to the bout in the eighth round.

* Stripped of the IBU Light Middleweight Title March 31, 2003, for failure to defend.
Rocky Marciano Gallery

Rocky Marciano was born Rocco Francis Marchegiano on September 1, 1923, in Brockton, Massachusetts. Marciano was World Heavyweight Champion from 1952 to 1956, and he is the only World Heavyweight Champion to retire undefeated.

Marciano was the first of six children born to Perrino and Pasqualena Marchegiano. Before dropping out of high school to make a few bucks — as a gardener, delivery boy, laborer for the gas company, and leather tanner at the shoe factory where his father worked — he starred in football and baseball. In 1947, Marciano had a tryout with the Chicago Cubs as a catcher but was let go because he couldn't make the throw from home plate to second base with accuracy.

Marciano didn't take up boxing until after he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He took up the sport mainly as a way to avoid KP duty (assisting the cooks) and other less desirable activities, but he showed a natural ability and fought as an amateur following his discharge in 1946.

After being discharged, Marciano visited an old Army buddy, Joe Sarelli, in Chicago. Sarelli's father, who was connected to the fight game, agreed to assess Marciano's potential as a fighter. "His father took me to a gym in Chicago's Loop," Marciano recalled. "For three days, I hit the big bag and the little bag. I skipped rope and shadow boxed. At the end of the workouts, Joe's father sat down with me. He told me, 'Rocky, why don't you go home and forget about being a fighter. You'll too small to be a heavyweight. You'll never make it.'"

Marciano, fighting under the name "Rocky Mack" in order to maintain his amateur standing, turned professional on March 17, 1947, with a third-round knockout of Lee Epperson. Marciano then returned to the amateurs, where he fought under his real name.

On March 1, 1948, at the New York Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, Marciano was on the short end of an unpopular split decision to Coley Wallace in what would be the last loss of his boxing career. In his last amateur fight, Marciano outpointed George McInnis to win the New England AAU Heavyweight Championship on March 22, 1948. Marciano did not move on to the nationals because of a fractured thumb. He finished his amateur career with a record of either 9-4, with 7 knockouts.

Marciano had been told that a manager based out of New York could do more for him than one in New England, so he went to New York City and met with Al Weill, who had previously managed Lou Ambers, Joey Archibald and Marty Servo. Weill telephoned trainer Charley Goldman and told him to set up a sparring session so they could gauge Marciano’s potential. Later that day, Marciano stepped into the ring at a CYO gym on 17th Street in Manhattan with a heavyweight named Wade Chancey.

“Al and I often looked over green kids who thought they could become fighters,” Goldman reminisced years later. “I’ll eat my derby hat if I ever saw anyone cruder than Rocky. He was so awkward that we stood there and laughed. He didn’t stand right. He didn’t throw a punch right. He didn’t block right. He didn’t do anything right. Then he hit Chancey with a roundhouse right which nearly put a hole in the guy’s head, and I told Weill that maybe I could do something with him.”

Goldman explained to his assistant, Angelo Dundee, that although Marciano lacked height and finesse, he had great punching power. Dundee said, "Charley taught the technique that if you are short, you make yourself smaller. Charley let him bend his knees to a deep knee squat. He was able to punch from that position, come straight up from the bag and hit a heck of a shot ... It was just bang-bang-bang-bang-BANG and get him outta there."

With Weill as his manager and Goldman as his trainer, Marciano, who changed his name from Marchegiano at Weill's suggestion (he said it was too hard to pronounce), won his second pro fight with a first-round knockout of Harry Bilazarian on July 12, 1948.

Weill became matchmaker for the International Boxing Club in May 1949. Since many state athletic commissions had a conflict-of-interest rule that precluded a matchmaker from managing a fighter, his stepson, Marty Weill, became Marciano's manager of record. In August 1952, Weill resigned as matchmaker and returned as Marciano's official manager.

Marciano won his first sixteen professional fights by knockout, but there were those who still didn't think much would become of him. Goody Petronelli, trainer of Marvin Hagler, caught one of Marciano's early fights and recalled for Sports Illustrated, "I never thought he'd make it. He was too old, almost 25. He was too short, he was too light. He had no reach. Rough and tough, but no finesse."

After twenty-five straight wins, Marciano fought Roland LaStarza, who was 37-0, on March 24, 1950. Marciano, a slight underdog, won by a ten-round split decision.

On October 26, 1951, with 37 wins and 32 knockouts under his belt, Marciano faced former World Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis and knocked him out in the eighth round. Louis was his boyhood idol, and Marciano cried in Louis's dressing room after the fight.

Five fights later, on September 23, 1952, Marciano got a shot at World Heavyweight Champion Jersey Joe Walcott. In the thirteenth round, behind on points, Marciano knocked Walcott out with a short right to the jaw to win the championship.

Marciano's first title defense was a rematch with Walcott. On May 15, 1953, he knocked Walcott out in the first round. Marciano's second title defense was another rematch. On September 24, 1953, he knocked out Roland LaStarza in eleven rounds.

On June 17, 1954, Marciano defeated Ezzard Charles by a fifteen-round unanimous decision. Afterwards, Marciano said, "It was my toughest fight." Marciano fought Charles again on September 17, 1954, and almost lost the championship. In the sixth round, Charles cut Marciano's nose so badly that his corner couldn't stop the bleeding. With the ring doctor watching the cut closely and considering stopping the fight, Marciano came on strong in the eighth round and knocked Charles out.

Marciano defended his title against Don Cockell on May 16, 1955, knocking him out in nine rounds. His sixth and final title defense was against Archie Moore on September 21, 1955. Marciano was dropped in the second round, but he came back to knock Moore out in the ninth round.

On April 27, 1956, Marciano retired from boxing at the age of 31. "I am retiring because of my wife and baby,” Marciano said in his retirement statement. "No man can say what he will do in the future, but barring poverty, the ring has seen the last of me. I am comfortably fixed, and I am not afraid of the future."

Friends of Marciano have said his physical condition also played a part in his decision to retire. Marciano had fought with a ruptured disc in his back since August 1949 and had suffered from an arthritic right elbow since 1951.

Many believe the main reason Marciano retired was because of his relationship with manager Al Weill. In April 1956, the chief investigator for the California Governor's special committee investigating boxing accused promoter Jimmy Murray of shortchanging Marciano and Don Cockell in their title fight and paying $10,000 "on the side" to Weill. Both Murray and Weill denied the allegations. Marciano allegedly said, "I don't care what it cost me, but I will never fight for this guy [Weill] again and let him scalp me."

On August 31, 1969, one day shy of what would have been his forty-sixth birthday, Marciano boarded a small plane with the pilot and one other passenger for a flight from Chicago to a speaking engagement in Des Moines, Iowa. The plane crashed in a field near Newton, Iowa, killing all three men on board.

Marciano was survived by his wife of 19 years, Barbara, and their two children, Mary Anne and Rocco Kevin.

Record Issues:<br>
Some sources say Marciano knocked out Joe Sidlaskis in the first round on February 2, 1948, as part of the Massachusetts/Rhode Island Golden Gloves Tournament. However, Victor Sidlaskas, not Joe Sidlaskis, competed in the novice division, while Marciano fought in the open division.

Some reports incorrectly list Sal Fichera as Fred Fischera and George McInnis as George McGinnis.

Marciano's bouts against Fichera and McInnis have incorrectly been reported as being part of the Olympic Trials.
Biography
From Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing

One of the most celebrated amateurs in modern United States amateur boxing history, slick southpaw Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade is now on a mission to accomplish something he did before starting to get paid to fight, and become world champion as a professional.

Andrade first started boxing at the tender age of six. As an amateur, Demetrius won his first gold medal in 2002 at the National Silver Gloves Championships for ages 12 and 13 at 112 pounds. He later had winning performances at the 2005 & 2006 U.S. National Championships, 2006 & 2006 National Golden Gloves Tournament.

In 2007, he captured a silver medal at the Pan-Am Games in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, losing in the final to local favorite Pedro Lima, 7-6. Later that same year, in Chicago, he became the first American in 12 years to capture gold at the World Amateur Boxing Championships. “Boo Boo” was completely dominant in the final competition, leading 10-1 after one round – aided by a standing eight count imposed on his opponent, Manon Boonkumnong – after which his opponent retired.

Andrade was considered the most promising pro prospect on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, as well as one of the most highly regarded in the entire world. In Beijing, he defeated Kakhaber Zhvania (Georgia), 11-9, and dangerous Audrey Balanov (Russian), 14-3, in the first two rounds of The Olympics. In the quarterfinals, though, he was unfairly eliminated, losing a controversial 11-9 decision to Korean boxer Kim Jung-Joo.

After the Olympics, Andrade signed a co-promotional contract with Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing and Artie Pelullo’s Banner Promotions.

Andrade made his much-anticipated pro debut October 23, 2008 on Versus television, stopping Patrick Cape (4-2) in the second round of their fight in Airway Heights, Washington. One month later, fighting at home in Rhode Island for the first time as a professional, Demetrius defeated Eric Marriott (0-1) by way of a fourth-round technical decision.
<br clear=all>

Early Life and Amateur Career
Ortiz was born and raised in Garden City, Kansas, the second of three children of Mexican immigrant parents. When he was seven years old, Ortiz's mother abandoned his family for a relationship with another man. Shortly thereafter, Ortiz began boxing at the Garden City Boxing Club at the insistence of his father, an alcoholic who often beat his children following his wife's departure.

When Ortiz was 13 years old, his father also abandoned the family, and Ortiz and his two siblings were turned over to the Kansas foster care system. However, he continued to box and won a Kansas Golden Gloves championship. After a brief foray into drug dealing as a teenager, Ortiz found his true calling.

After Ortiz's older sister became a legal adult and moved to Denver, Colorado, Ortiz and his younger brother moved in with her. While training at a Salvation Army boxing center, he was noticed by former heavyweight boxing contender Ron Lyle, who had become a supervisor at the center. In 2003, Lyle guided Ortiz to a Junior Olympics tournament, where, at the age of sixteen, he won the 132-pound weight division with a perfect 5-0 record. This time, he was noticed by another former boxer, Roberto Garcia, who had held the IBF super featherweight title during the 1990s and whose father was the trainer of Fernando Vargas.

Though Garcia was based in Oxnard, California, he offered to train Ortiz, who accepted and moved from Colorado to California, where he began training at Oxnard's famous La Colonia Gym. Garcia later became Ortiz's legal guardian, and Ortiz graduated from Pacifica High School. After winning the national PAL championship at age 16, at seventeen Ortiz reached the United States Olympic boxing trials in the 132-pound weight class, where he was eliminated in the final stages. (The weight class was instead won by Vicente Escobedo.)

Ortiz turned professional later in 2004 while still only seventeen years of age. When he reached the age of eighteen in 2005 and became a legal adult, he gained custody of his younger brother.

He was trained by five trainers who all worked together to get him ahead in his boxing career. His original trainers included Ignacio "Buck" Avilia, Antonio Orozco Sr., Juan M. Aldana Jr., and Alfred Ritz. He won the Ringside National Title in 2001,and 2002 and the National Jr. Olympics in 2002. Additionally, Oritz won the PAL. == Biography ==
From Golden Boy Promotions

Deontay Wilder was the Cinderella story of the amateur boxing season, rising from obscurity to not only win the National Golden Gloves and US Championships, but to earn a Bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, the United States’ only boxing medal.

But Wilder’s compelling story doesn’t begin there; it begins in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he was a stellar athlete in high school who had the opportunity to play college football and basketball. But his priorities were elsewhere, mainly with his daughter Naieya, who he worked two jobs to support. Times were tough though, especially considering that Naieya was born with spinal bifida and required additional medical care.

So Wilder turned to boxing in 2005, knowing that his talents would eventually serve him well. And he was right. With just 14 bouts under his belt, Wilder roared through the National Golden Gloves and US Championships in 2007, and he eventually won the Olympic trials with just 21 total amateur bouts. His improbable run continued in this summer’s Beijing Games, where he won two bouts before losing a semifinal decision to Italy’s Clemente Russo. Back home with a Bronze medal in his hand, Wilder got ready for the next chapter of this amazing story, teaming up with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions to help him on his road to gold as a professional.
Biography
