Born in Alang-alang Mandaue, '''Rodel Bryan Generalao Mayol''' braced the hardship of boxing at an early age. He cruised his way in the amateurs capturing five medals as a champion. And long before we knew it, he became an ALA boy named after the Aldeguer Gym which trains world class boxers like [[Rey Bautista|Boom Boom Bautista]] and rising phenom [[AJ Banal]]. He was first managed by Terry Lee Carter and then by Japanese promoter Yasuo Matsuoka. His first shot at the world title was against [[Eagle Kyowa]], a Japan-based Thai, wherein the bemedaled Mayol frame dominated the champion for six rounds but lost control in the final rounds and was drained out at the end of the fight. He had not slept the night before the fight and he was not in tip top condition suffering from jet lag.

After a year of inactivity he had to bolt out from his manager and find ways to fight because he has a family to feed. Then came Canadian matchmaker Michael Koncz, who gave him a title shot against [[Ulises Solis]] on the undercard of the [[David Diaz vs. Erik Morales|Diaz vs. Morales match]] in Chicago.

Once again Mayol proved to everyone that he can mix it up with the champion banging him and almost decking the champ. But he was caught with a picture perfect left hook which sent him to the canvas for the count. It was a very frustrating loss for Mayol. What people didn't know was that Mayol had to undergo hell before that match. First, he had no sparring partner. He only sparred with Filipino [[Mercito Gesta]], which was too much for a 108 lbs fighter like Mayol (Gesta was 133 lbs). Secondly, they were basically abandoned by his Japanese manager. Koncz was just a matchmaker so they basically had to look out for their own training. Homer Sayson, a famous columnist, said that sometimes they only ate once a day and they had to walk from their apartment to the gym. In the end, Mayol was malnourished and was not in good shape when he fought Solis. With the loss, the Philippine Boxing Media basically wrote him off until [[Manny Pacquiao]] came to his rescue and bought his contract from his Japanese manager.

Johnson is a Milwaukee, Wisconsin based manager/agent with a stable of fighters who have some of the worst records in the United States. Most of his boxers are known to make appearances in cards in states in the Upper Midwest, as well as in Indiana and Illinois. Johnson would occasionally fight himself, usually losing by first round knock-out, until his license was revoked for good in 2002.

In a toe-to-toe featherweight ten round war fought in center ring which turned out to be one of the best-fought bouts of 2008, featherweights Rogers 'The Tiger' Mtagwa and Tomas 'El Norteño' Villa went at it in a televised bout from the Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona. It was give-and-take fight from the opening bell. Villa, a Mexican now fighting out of Midland, Texas (20-6-4 with 13 kayos), entered riding a 12 bout unbeaten streak over the past three and a half years. Mtagwa, a Tanzanian fighting out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (25-12-2 with 18 kayos), matched his opponent blow-for-blow in nonstop action. Jabs and power punches came nonstop from both participants in brutal offensive bursts for the entire bout, and it was evident to anyone watching this bout that 'someone' was going to go. The pace was furious. The action reached its climax in round nine when Villa, determined to win, threw everything he had left in the tank at Mtagwa and tried to finish him. Mtagwa took quite a beating trying to counter, but was hit with many power punches and was finally decked. Mtagwa appeared down and out, but somehow beat the count and survived the round although it was very ugly. Villa came out in round ten looking for 'the kill' but it was not to be. Mtagwa, sensing the end, now threw everything he had left ferociously at center ring at Villa, surprising Villa by coming back from such a brutal beating. In an exciting ending, Mtagwa traded power punches with Villa, decking him once, twice, and a third time for good at 1:20. Highlights of the last two rounds of this bout continued to be replayed, solidifying Mtagwa's world ranking, and eventually helping to earn him [[Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Rogers Mtagwa|a shot]] at 26-0 WBO Super Bantamweight champion [[Juan Manuel Lopez]] at [[Madison Square Garden]] in New York City.

In the amateurs '''Orzubek Nazarov''' was the European champion in 1987 and had a record of 153-12. Nazarov won a bronze medal for the Soviet Union at the 1986 World amateur championships in Reno, United States in the lightweight class.

Following the defense of his [[WBA]] title against [[Leavander Johnson]], Nazarov was traveling back to his native Kyrgyzstan when the car he was in was attacked by gunmen. The car's other occupants, one of whom was allegedly in debt to Russian organized crime figures, were both killed. Nazarov was shot in the arm but survived. Before his next defense against [[Jean-Baptiste Mendy]], he began to experience problems with his left eye, and when he was inadvertently thumbed in the eye in the third round of his bout with Mendy, the retina tore. Four subsequent operations failed to correct the condition, leaving him all but blind in the left eye. The Mendy bout was Nazarov's last.

'''Solo Boxeo''' ("Just Boxing") was a weekly television series that aired on the Spanish-language [[Univision]] and [[Telefutura]] networks from August 2000 to December 2008. During the last two years of its run, the show as a whole was sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and formally known as ''Solo Boxeo Tecate''. (Prior to this, the show was sponsored by the Miller Brewing Company and called "Solo Boxeo de Miller," or "Miller's ''Solo Boxeo''.")

The series was devoted to the broadcast of live fight cards featuring Hispanic boxers, most frequently those promoted by [[Top Rank Boxing|Top Rank Incorporated]] and, in the show's final years, [[Golden Boy Promotions]]. Top Rank was a key supplier of fights for the show for the length of its run.

''Solo Boxeo'' debuted in August 2000 on Telefutura's parent network, Univision, and originally ran only for one hour. When the Telefutura network first went on the air in January 2002, the series was expanded to a two-hour format and transferred from Univision to Telefutura, where it remained until its cancellation.

The primary commentators and hosts of the show were [[Ricardo Celis]] and [[Bernardo Osuna]]. Former 140-pound contender [[Ahmed Santos]] also frequently appeared as a commentator and interviewer. [[Lupe Contreras]] served as ring announcer.

Notable bouts that were broadcast on the show include the 2003 [[WBC]] lightweight [[Fight:629991|title fight]] between [[Jesus Chavez]] and [[Sirimongkol Singwancha]], in which Chavez captured his first world title, the 2004 [[WBA]] super flyweight [[Fight:851162|title bout]] between [[Martin Castillo]] and [[Alexander Munoz]], in which Munoz, fighting for the first time in North America, was handed his first defeat, and the January 2006 [[Antonio Escalante vs. Jose Andres Hernandez|encounter]] between [[Antonio Escalante]] and [[Jose Andres Hernandez]], considered by some to be among the best bouts fought that year.
