Fres Oquendo began his professional career at the age 23 in 1997. In only his 11th pro fight he defeated Olympic Bronze Medalist Duncan Dokiwari and scored an upset win. He continued his winning streak until he fought the highly touted Clifford Etienne, who was a 10 to 1 favourite and undefeated. Oquendo knocked him down seven times in a World Elimination title fight. Oquendo fought for the IBF Heavyweight Championship in 2003 and lost to Chris Byrd in a highly controversial decision in which many, including the HBO commentators thought he won.

Some notable opponents Fres has faced are John Ruiz, David Tua, Evander Holyfield, James Toney, Jean-Marc Mormeck, Bruce Seldon, Bert Cooper and Oliver McCall. Most are former World Champions. Oquendo has gone into the opponents' home town in every one of his losses, and, by Compubox Numbers, he has outscored all of these opponents, but fallen short on the judges' scorecards.

Oquendo has held the WBC & WBO & WBA Latino Heavyweight Belt, and NABF, NABA & USBA Heavyweight Belts, making him the only Heavyweight fighter in history to hold all of these titles. He has been rated as high as #2 in The Ring Magazine and as high as #1 in the IBF and WBO, #4 in WBA and #3 in WBC, as well as being a two-time world title challenger.

Oquendo has fought on HBO, HBO Pay-Per-View, Showtime, ESPN2, Fox Sports Net and Versus. He has helped prepare many world champions for World Championship fights such as Nikolay Valuev, David Haye and Vitali Klitschko.

Oquendo is currently the #2 WBA Heavyweight and is slated to fight next for the WBA Regular title against Manuell Charr on September 29th, 2018
That month, it was reported that Angelo's son, Jim Dundee, decided to terminate the licensing agreement with Angelo's name which reopened three years earlier. Dundee stated:
:"With great sorrow, I felt it best to move in a different direction, as I felt that the gym was being managed in the manner my father wouldn't deem fit. After much soul-searching, I sent a cease and desist letter to all parties involved, and effectively terminated the agreement on May 1 of this year. I want to make clear that the 'World Famous 5th Street Gym' that is being opened by Tom Tsatas and Dino Spencer on Miami Beach is in no way affiliated with my father Angelo Dundee, the Dundee family, nor with my father's protege Matt Baiamonte."

The 5th Street Gym has been called "the world's most famous gym." It opened in 1950 at the corner of 5th Street and Washington Avenue in Miami Beach, Florida. The gym was owned and operated by Chris Dundee.

Dundee started managing boxers in 1928 and began promoting fights in 1932. In 1950, with the completion of the Miami Beach Convention Center, Dundee moved his base of operations from New York City to Miami Beach and promoted boxing and wrestling at the Convention Center for 27 years.

His brother, Angelo Dundee, trained numerous world champions at the 5th Street Gym, including Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Carmen Basilio, Luis Manuel Rodriguez, Willie Pastrano, Sugar Ramos, Jimmy Ellis and Ralph Dupas.

The gym was nicknamed "Oz," Chris Dundee the "Wizard of Oz" and Angelo Dundee the "Prince of Oz."

In its heyday, the 5th Street Gym was the place to be. In addition to many of the world’s top fighters who trained there, celebrities were always plentiful among its visitors. Malcolm X, The Beatles, Sean Connery, Frank Sinatra and Jackie Gleason are just a few of the many iconic figures to have made their presence felt.

The gym was torn down in 1993. Five years later, Chris Dundee died at age 91.

Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, who worked with Angelo Dundee and many of his fighters at the gym, wrote a book titled Tales from the 5th Street Gym: Ali, the Dundees, and Miami's Golden Age of Boxing. It was published in March 2010.

The 5th Street Gym reopened at its original location in September 2010. The International Boxing Hall of Fame reported:
:"Nearly 60 years after it first opened, and 17 years after it was torn down in 1993, the famous gym is now back. Angelo Dundee, along with partners, Dino Spencer and Tom Tsatas unveiled the modern facility with fanfare as many members of the boxing community helped Dundee and company cut the red ribbon to officially signal the rebirth of the gym." The gym was re-opened by Tom Tsatas and Dino Spencer with Angelo's blessing. The gym began training such champions as David Haye, Bernard Hopkins, Lucian Bute, Anthony and Andre Direll, and many celebrities such as Adriana Lima, LeBron James and Dave Chapelle.
Angelo Dundee passed away in 2012 at age 90.

Tsatas and Spencer moved the 5th St. Gym and named it the "World Famous 5th Street Gym" out of respect for Angelo's passing. The gym was at 1434 Alton Road in Miami Beach, until March 2018.

The 5th St. Gym is currently located back on 5th St. at 1019 5th St. dino Spencer and Tom Tsatas still own the gym.Fighters and celebrities from all over the world still come to get a glimpse of the history and the training. Currently the gym has many cham[oons and contenders as well as celebrities who train there and people from all over the world still come and visit.
Notes
* Promoted by Timur Dugazaev of Terek Boxing Events. Over thirty thousand fans in attendance for the event at Ahmat Arena, which was a sellout.
* Ruslan Chagaev 32-2-1 (20 KOs) versus Fres Oquendo 37-7 (24 KOs). Complete fight on YouTube:
* Chagaev entered the title bout as the WBA #3 heavyweight contender, while Oquendo entered as the WBA #4 heavyweight contender.
* Southpaw Chagaev fought the bout coming forward landing some good head and body shots, while Oquendo fought side to side as counterpuncher. Oquendo got stronger as the fight went on, Chagaev looked tired entering the championship rounds. Oquendo started slow but finsihed strong looking like the stronger fighter. Chagaev looked tired and thrilled when the final bell ended. It was a very tactical fight and the experience of both fighters as well as respect for each other was evident. The 12th round the crowd was on its feet and it was an exciting finish as Oquendo looked for the KO and Chagaev looked for the fight to end fighting smart.
* Cut over the left eye gave Chagaev some trouble from the fourth round, enabling Oquendo to keep the bout close. The corner dealt with the cut and stopped the bleeding.
* First world championship bout and card of note in Chechnya. Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov was in attendance at ringside.
* Boxing celebrities included Evander Holyfield, David Haye, Marco Huck, and Artur Grigorian. Ring commentary was provided by Michael Buffer.
* If Oquendo had won one more round, it would have been a majority draw. There were only a few holds. The bout was fought cleanly.
* According to Oquendo's Chicago promoter Bobby Hitz, Oquendo's contract called for mandatory WBA world title rematch in 120 days and is scheduled for November 2014.
* At age 41, Oquendo would have been the oldest man to claim a share of the world heavyweight title since George Foreman in 1995.
* The ring appeared one of the largest rings seen in a televised world championship bout or anywhere.
* Oquendo now has a total of 319 rounds fought as a professional Heavyweight making him the most experienced ranked heavyweight besides Wladimyr Klitschko who has 330 rounds in the books
On the road in Mormeck's home country, Oquendo got the shaft. Mormeck, a former unified cruiserweight titlist fighting in his second bout at heavyweight following a two-year layoff, probably isn't going anywhere as a heavyweight based on this performance. The three judges had it for Mormeck, 96-95 (twice) and 96-94. Pathetic. Watching the DVD, I had it more like 98-92 for Oquendo. Maybe you could give Mormeck another round or two, but to have him winning is preposterous. Oquendo appeared to land harder shots than Mormeck and he was way busier. Square Ring, Oquendo's promoter, had CompuBox compile punch statistics off the DVD, and the numbers illustrate the fight that I saw. According to the stats, Oquendo landed 158 of 745 punches, while Mormeck landed just 103 of 331 blows. It's a candidate for robbery of the year.

Summary
In an exciting heavyweight bout, three time world champion James Toney won the IBA and WBO NABO Heavyweight Titles by a 12 round split decision over former 2 Time heavyweight title challenger Fres Oquendo. Oquendo threw more total punches in every round and landed more total punches on 8 out of the 12 Rounds. Oquendo clearly won 11( 22-6 blows) and 12 ( 32-11 blows)as well as hurting toney in the 11th round but failed to finish the granite chin former champion. Oquendo closed the show by outlanding Toney 109-47 the last 4 rounds. However, In what must be the most bizarre moment in professional boxing in 2008, in round 4, Oquendo pushed Toney towards the ring ropes during a clinch, and Toney slipped on one of the mat advertisements on the ring floor and rolled out of the ring! He immediately climbed back into the ring uninjured and the action resumed. After one warning, Referee Dr. Lou Moret finally took a point away from Oquendo in round 8 for rabbit punching. After watching the replay it is obvious Oquendo hit Toney on the ear and not behind the head. The one point penalty proved costly, as it not only cost Oquendo a round he was winning, but ultimately cost him the fight. Toney fought a clean bout. As the scores were announced, Toney knelt in his corner in prayer for 'one more chance' at the heavyweight title. Oquendo once again appeared to be in shock after another robbery of the year candidate.
* Versus viewers had Oquendo winning in the scoring 115-113
* Versus blows report: Oquendo 222/740 30%, Toney 154/491 31%.
* Versus announcers had Oquendo winning 116-112.
* Most Boxing writers had Oquendo winning 116-112
5th St. Gym 305-763-8110 555 Washington Miami Beach, FL. 33139

The 5th St. Gym got its start in 1950 when Chris Dundee began promoting big time boxing in Miami Beach. It quickly became the celebrated University of Boxing, overseen by Chris, the “Wizard of Oz”, and his brother Angelo, the “Prince of Oz”. The gym was also a magnet for a wide range of international celebrities including Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Jackie Gleason, Malcolm X, The Beatles, Sean Connery, Frank Sinatra, Sylvester Stallone, and a myriad of others who were absorbed into the gym’s legendary mystique. Boxing people the world over sent their fighters to be trained at the 5th St. gym. Every possible thing that could be taught about this grim profession of boxing was taught by the Wizard. It originally lasted around four decades and created countless world champions, such as Carmen Basilio, Willie Pastrano and the greatest of them all, Cassius Clay-who then became the ubiquitous Muhammad Ali. He still remains the shining accomplishment of Oz (5th St. Gym).

It helped shape the history of Miami Beach. It is synonymous with the history of Miami Beach for what it was and will become once again. The gym became a tourist attraction in the decayed streets as the money had moved north the Fountain Bleu and Eden Roc. The biggest names and fighters paraded through this magical gym known as 5th St Gym; Ali, Basilio, Griffilth, Arche Moore, Willie Pep, Sonny Liston, Roberto Duran. The list is infinite. As shabby and unkempt the area was, the gym simply belonged.

It has taken many years, but once again the gym has come alive. The Wizard is gone. The original concrete is gone. Ali and Pacheco have aged along with the Prince. However, magic is magic- and the love of boxing goes on. The rebirth of the 5th St. Gym will continue to keep its spirit alive. With perhaps a few more strong years remaining, the energy and legacy of Ali, Basilio, Angelo Dundee, and Ferdie Pacheco will, too, live on.

Tom Tsatas, Dino Spencer and Matt Baiamonte re-opened Oz; with the guidance and blessing of Angelo and his son, Jimmy Dundee, the gym once again is resurrected in its original location at 5th and Washington. Matt Baiamonte, Angelo Dundee’s chief trainer and protégé is the direct lineage for the gym. Dino Spencer, who has lived his life in the gym and trained under current world renowned trainer Freddy Roach, is there side by side to condition, work corners, and teach a new crop and changed generation the art of conditioning, boxing and a new found sport of MMA to youth, women and new-comers. Finally, Tom Tsatas, who coincidentally shares the same birthday with Muhammad Ali (Jan 17th), uses his passion for boxing to take on the insurmountable task of reviving the marvel that is the 5th St. Gym-thus, sustaining the legacy of its predecessor. Although Cassius Clay or The Wizard Chris Dundee can never be replaced, for there can only ever be one of each, the world is sure to see a new line of acomplished fighters emerge from the 5th St. Gym. This new Oz trio will use the surreal energy of the living legends of Angelo Dundee, Muhammad Ali, and Ferdie Pacheco to uphold the memory of some of the greatest individuals in boxing history. The gym has already had celebrities such as Matt Damen and Dave Chepelle training at the famous gym as well as the likes of WBA Heavyweight Champ David Haye, Fres Oquendo, Lucian Bute, George Groves, Anthony and Andre Direll and Melissa Hernandez training there. Visitors have included Muhammad Ali, Shannon Briggs, Nazeem Richardson, Bert Sugar, Glen Johnson, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, Emanuel Steward, Floyd Mayweather, Antonio Margarito and many many others. The gym is open to beginners, amateurs, pros, soccer mom's and weekend warriors. On any given day you can see glimpses of the original as Muhammad Ali, Angelo Dundee and Ferdie Pacheco can stroll in there unannounced to live the memories of the magic known as 5th St. Gym.
