Luis Collazo won the [[WBA]] welterweight title on April 2, 2005 with a 12-round split decision victory over defending champion [[Jose Antonio Rivera]]. However, in [[Zab Judah]] there was a WBA "super champion" then so that Collazo was not the highest recognized champion of that organization. On January 7, 2006, Judah, who also held the WBC and [[IBF]] welterweight titles, lost a [[Zab Judah vs. Carlos Manuel Baldomir|12-round decision]] to [[Carlos Manuel Baldomir]] in New York. Baldomir had chosen to pay the sanctioning fee of the [[WBC]] only; as a result, only the WBC title had been at stake; nevertheless Judah was stripped of his WBA belt. Thus, Collazo then attained recognition as the WBA's sole welterweight champion.

In an exciting Showtime-televised fight which appeared as if it could go either way on the scorecards, Carl Froch remained unbeaten at 26-0 and retained his WBC super middleweight title by split decision over American challenger Andre Dirrell. Froch chased the southpaw Dirrell all night, and threw many punches 'into the wind' as the agile Dirrell constantly moved from side to side and slipped the majority of Froch's punches. Froch moved forward for all twelve rounds as the aggressor throwing many combinations, while Dirrell counterpunched extremely well and landed a number of powerful right hand leads. One point of controversy was that Froch frequently hit Dirrell behind the head, and was warned but not penalized by the referee. Dirrell was warned in the seventh, eighth and tenth rounds before the referee decided to take a point away from him for holding during the tenth. In round twelve, Dirrell was warned by the referee for hitting Froch behind the head, when in fact it was Froch that had just hit Dirrell behind the head. Without the point deduction, the bout would have been closer. Most of these rounds were quiet defensive gems, causing the crowd to boo the lack of action at the end of every round. At the end of round eleven, Dirrell's grandfather told him in his corner "You better knock Froch out because they ain't never gonna give us a decision here." But the hometown crowd was quiet during rounds, so scoring appeared fair. On July 22, 2007, Rigondeaux and teammate [[Erislandy Lara]] failed to appear for their scheduled bouts at the Pan American Games in Brazil. It was initially announced that Rigondeaux was to turn professional, joining fellow 2004 Cuban Olympians [[Odlanier Solis]], [[Yuriorkis Gamboa]] and [[Yan Barthelemy]], who defected earlier in 2007. As with the other Cuban defectors, Rigondeaux signed a promotional deal with [[Ahmet Oener|Ahmet Oener]] and [[ARENA Box-Promotion]]. However on August 2nd, Rigondeaux and Lara were taken into police custody in Brazil, stating that they wanted to return home to Cuba. Then Cuban leader Fidel Castro has stated that Rigondeaux and Lara will not box again for the Cuban team. In February 2009, Rigondeaux defected again via Mexico City to Miami, and signed with ARENA Box.

[[The Ring Magazine|''The Ring'']] magazine's "Fighter of the Year" Award is a gold and silver medal given to the boxer, who, during the year previous, has by his conduct and fighting qualities "earned the esteem of the sports public." The four points which originally governed the award were:
*1) He must be foremost in his contribution to the skill and the science of boxing and he need not be a champion.
*2) The recipient must combine with his high place in the ranking of fighters a similar position as a sportsman.
*3) He must associate with the abilities as a fighter good public relations and a reputation for clean and moral living.
*4) The boxer receiving the award must be recognized as an example to the growing American youth.

'''Chad Dawson''' was born to Wanda and [[Rick Dawson]] in Hartsville, South Carolina in 1982. He has 4 brothers and 2 sisters. When Chad was 7 years old, his father, a former boxer, moved the family to New Haven, Connecticut. He turned professional in 2001, after being the 2000 United States National Under-19 Amateur Champion at 165 pounds while compiling a 67-13 amateur record.

In his professional debut, Dawson knocked out [[Steve Garrett]] at 1:46 of the second round on August 18, 2001. Coming up as a prospect he earned victories over notable opponents such as [[Ian Gardner]] and [[Carl Daniels]].

On June 2nd, 2006 in his bout with [[Eric Harding]] (23-3-1), Dawson scored a unanimous decision victory becoming the new [[North American Boxing Federation|NABF]] Light Heavyweight Champion. After suffering a flash knockdown in the opening seconds of the first round, Dawson dominated the fight and came away with a decision by scores of 117-110, 116-111, and 117-110. On February 3, 2007, Dawson faced [[Tomasz Adamek]] (31-0-0) for the [[WBC]] Light Heavyweight Championship, Dawson would win by unanimous decision, with scores of 116-110, 117-109, and 118-108. Dawson has since defended his title successfully against [[Jesus Ruiz]] and [[Epifanio Mendoza]], by 4 and 6 round TKOs, respectively.

Dawson still resides in New Haven, Connecticut and has a son, Prince Chadwick.

His brother [[Ricky Dawson]] is also a boxer.
