Montes was dropped with a single left uppercut and failed to beat the count. Significant mention was given by the television commentators of Camacho's "method" for setting up the uppercut. Prior to throwing the knockout punch, Hector threw, and may have intentionally missed with, a right jab (remember, Macho fought from the southpaw stance). The punch went over Montes' shoulder and Hector bent his wrist backwards, effectively locking the head in place for the uppercut. Montes could not move out of the way of the punch, which landed flush on the jaw. Several replays from various angles seemed to confirm this.
Having said that, this still was indicative of Camacho's considerable skill, because in real-time it was too fast to observe, and though obviously not legal, (if intentional), it wasn't something that most boxers could pull off.
