• Stanford went down early in the 1st from what was ruled by the referee to be a slip. He later went down again from what appeared to be a knockdown but no count was started. Finally, while clearly holding the back of Stanford's head down, Calzaghe landed several uppercuts that sent Stanford to the mat again. At this, the referee waved an end to the bout.

Comments

The 1st Round was certainly out of the ordinary, with Stanford going to the mat three times with all being difficult to determine if the referee scored them as knockdowns or slips. Of note, however, the referee never began counting on any of them. After the fight was ended, the British announcers declared the stoppage to be "very, very early".
