  • Referee: Billy Jones

"Dave Charnley retained his British lightweight title last night with a labored, 15 round decision over Maurice Cullen at the Belle Vue Stadium. The southpaw champion attacked throughout the fight, but was up against a will-o-the-wisp character in Cullen, the ex-miner, who made great use of his speed. Cullen drew all the cheers and the verdict was booed by the northern crowd. Charnley nearly floored Cullen in round three, but the northerner hung on. Then Charnley brought the challenger to his knees with a body punch, but Cullen was up immediately. The champ's body punches were the most effective of the battle and gradually slowed the challenger down, and though Cullen fought courageously and worked well with flicking left jabs, it was not enough." -United Press International
