"Maurice Tavant of France retained his European lightweight title by stopping young Lothar Abend of West Germany in the 10th round of their scheduled 15 round match. For Lothar it was his first loss after 19 straight wins. He made a close fight of it over the first 9 rounds against his taller and more experienced foe but in the 10th round ran into trouble. A solid right to the jaw dropped him for an eight-count and although he tried to fight back upon regaining his feet, Maurice unleashed a two-fisted attack that sent him toppling to the canvas. Abend staggered back to his feet at the count of nine, but was rubber-legged and glassy-eyed and the referee wisely stopped the fight." -Boxing Illustrated, May 1966 issue
