Tony DeMarco 147 lbs beat Vince Martinez 147 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

DeMarco hurt Martinez in the 10th round, having taken a lead with effective body blows. Martinez dominated the first four rounds with effective counterpunching, with a strong right hand.

"Tony DeMarco came of age last night as he added boxing skills to his slugging power for a unanimous 10-round decision over Vince Martinez at Fenway Park. Martinez, using his left jab to keep Tony off balance and counter-punch with his right, dominated the first four rounds. However, it was DeMarco's ability to box with the clever Jersey cutie, which enabled him to set up Martinez. Boston's Tony, a notorious head-hunter in his earlier days, landed damaging body blows that were decisive. DeMarco had Vince in trouble in the 10th round as he pounded him rubbery-legged at the ropes. But as in previous spots the game Martinez hung on and fought back." -Associated Press

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 96-93 DeMarco
  • Both fighters weighed 146 3/4
  • Immediately after this bout, Boston promoter Sam Silverman offered welterweight champion Johnny Saxton $100,000 for a title defense against DeMarco in Fenway Park in August. Saxton and his manager Blinky Palermo, who were both seated at ringside, stated they were 'very interested.' However, the bout never came off as Saxton defended his title against Carmen Basilio in September in Syracuse.
