  • Date: 1960-12-01
  • Location: Messesporthalle, Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany
  • The Ring, March 1961, reported:

Cologne, Germany. More than 7000 spectators attended the Peter Mueller- Joey Giardello fray at the Exhibition Hall [...]. Giardello openend up in top gear, making excellent use of his advantage in reach but Mueller was able to crowd his man in the second round. There was bitter fighting at the end of the round, both fighters continuing after the bell had sounded.

The third and fourth rounds saw Mueller endure a rugged bombardement. In the fifth Giardello began to tire and tried to keep Mueller at bay with an inaccurate left. The next three rounds went to Black Peter who plastered the American in spasms of furious in- fighting and although Giardello made it even- steven in the ninth, he had clearly shot his bolt. Mueller made a grandstand finish of it which clinched the decision on his favor. It was Muellers 150th fight in the paid ranks and probably his best yet. A few weeks later he was nominated by German fight scribes as their Boxer of the Year.
