"Carl (Bobo) Olson, the aging battler at 35, toyed with highly regarded 'Irish' Wayne Thornton, 23, last night to win a 10-round majority decision on a nationally-televised show from Kezar Pavillion. It was a good battle, with neither man backing up. But Olson's experience paid off. Bobo worked hard for this bout because he knew it was the end of the trail if he didn't win it. Thornton's best rounds were in the early going as Olson felt him out. After that Olson took over. There were no knockdowns. However, Olson stunned Thornton with combinations to the head in the 5th and 8th rounds. Thornton came out charging in the last round, apparently knowing he had to score a knockout to win. However, the experienced Olson side-stepped most of his punches and landed some head-rocking blows of his own." -Hayward Daily Review
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 7-3 Olson
- Unofficial UPI scorecard - 8-2 Olson
