- Date: 1964-02-14
- Location: Messuhalli, Helsinki, Finland
In a full packed Mässhallen in Helsinki the Finn Olli Maeki won the European lightweight title by clearly outpointing German champ Conny Rudhoff over 15 rounds. Judge and ringreferee Nello Barrorecchio had only one round for Rudhoff, the 12th. Points were 71-68 in Maeki's favor. The fight was a hard one, though. Both men circled around each other looking for openings. The blows were hard, but Maeki had a better guard than Rudhoff who scored best at infighting. Maeki scored at half distance with endless series of lefts and rights, outboxing Rudhoff in the 9th. The German came back in the 12th and 13th, making the Finn's left eye swollen and even cutting his eyebrow. Maeki kept his cool and won the last two rounds with methodically lefts at half distance, frustrating Rudhoff.
The Helsinki newspaper Hufudstadsbladet, in Swedish language, wrote jubilantly that Maeki now was in a proper league after his premature and unsucsessful attempt to win the world featherweight title from Davey Moore in 1962 after only 10 fights.
