Jose Becerra 118 lbs beat Alphonse Halimi 117 lbs by KO at 2:02 in round 8 of 15

World Bantamweight Title

"Joe Becerra from Guadalajara, lifted the world's bantamweight championship from Alphonse Halimi of French-Algeria, by knocking out the latter in 2:02 of the 8th round in the new Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena's first athletic event. And the pro-Latin crowd went crazy when their idol floored Halimi for a four-count and then a wicked left hook to the body, followed by a right to the jaw as the old champion was falling. Halimi hit the canvas with a thud and was counted out by referee Tommy Hart. Halimi lost his big opportunity to retain his crown in the 2nd round. Toward the end of this round Halimi landed a terrific right hook that staggered Becerra, and for a second it looked like he was going down. But Halimi didn't follow his advantage and let his foe get away. Halimi's downfall can be attributed to his inability to handle Becerra against the ropes." -Pasadena Star-News
