'Hurricane' Carter scores TKO over Britain's Scott
United Press International | March 10, 1965
Third ranked middleweight Rubin (Hurricane) Carter scored a ninth-round technical knockout over Britain's Harry Scott Tuesday night. Referee Harry Gibbs stopped their 10-round fight because Scott had a bad cut above the left eye. Carter first opened the cut in the fourth round with a solid right cross. The wound worsened as the fight progressed, and Gibbs twice visited Scott's corner before allowing the fight to continue.
The Clifton, N.J., slugger opened the ninth session with a series of lefts to the head which drew blood from Scott's eye. Gibbs stopped the fight after 1:15 of the round after another examination in mid-ring. Carter was ahead on points when the fight was stopped, but he had not floored Scott in an all-action bout which had the crowd of 5,500 in the Royal Albert Hall roaring their approval.
Carter scaled 165½ pounds against 161¾ pounds for Scott.
The preliminary bout between Vic Andretti of London and former world lightweight champion Joe Brown ended in similar fashion when referee Freddie Catland stopped the 10-round fight because of a bad cut above Brown's eye in the fifth round.
The feature had been lively throughout, but hard as Carter tried, he was unable to become the first man to send Scott to the floor. By the UPI scorecard, Carter won four of the completed rounds, Scott two and two were even.
Carter opened the fight by hitting Scott flush on the jaw with a right cross, but he was short during the remainder of the round. He was warned by Gibbs for "pulling his man" in the second, and a board of control official ordered him to lower his protector after the fifth round because it was too high.
In the early rounds Carter was often wild as he tried to land a big punch. He was not hurt by the Briton, who connected often with both hands to the body. Carter started jabbing in the fourth, punching in combinations, and began to take control of the fight. He evaded Scott's rushes with smart footwork and was punching better than the Briton. Scott concentrated on the body, but Carter hit him with right counters and solid hooks. They often slugged it out toe-to-toe in mid-ring, bringing cheers from the crowd.
Scott's seconds were unable to close his wound and the writing was on the wall from the seventh round as Gibbs kept glancing at the injury. It was no surprise when he stopped the bout.
- Unofficial UPI scorecard (through 8 completed rounds) - 4-2-2 Carter
