Armando weighed about 206 before he started training for this bout. Carnera took it easy on his smaller opponent until the referee told him he would have to fight or there might be no dough. Among the interested spectators were George Godfrey and Muggsy Taylor of the promotional firm of Taylor and Gunnis who arrived late. Taylor was looking for Baron Dougherty Godfrey's manager who was with him. A young Ralph Tribuani acted as an interpetor for Carnera.
