Taylor was given a standing eight count in the first round, and knocked down in the opening seconds of round two. However, Saulsberry, who outweighed Taylor by nearly eighty pounds, began to tire noticeably shortly after scoring the knockdown. With his back on the ropes early in round three, Taylor landed a punch that caused Saulsberry to fall forward onto him, pinning Taylor against the ropes. After separating the fighters, referee Marvin Whittamore ruled that Saulsberry was unfit to continue, and stopped the bout at the official time of 0:35. It was Taylor's first win in over five years, and he celebrated by doing a back flip in the ring.
