"Sammy Angott, the glove-throwing Louisville slugger, is the new lightweight champion in 41 states and a few outlying precincts ruled by the NBA. Angott tired in the stretch after building up a decisive early margin but maintained enough power last night to whip Davey Day, Chicago, in 15 rounds before a Kentucky Derby eve crowd of approximately 8,000. In New York and other non-NBA states, Lou Ambers still is the lightweight champion. The NBA withdrew recognition of his title after charging he failed to defend it against an NBA selected challenger and chose Day and Angott to fight it out for the right of succession." -Associated Press

According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, Angott knocked Day down in the 3rd round with a left hook. Day was up at one, and upon rising clinched.

  • The AP reported there were no official knockdowns in the fight, but that in the 3rd round Day skidded to the canvas from a push.
  • Jack Dempsey was the referee and sole arbiter. He scored the fight 6-5-4 for Angott.
