"Ex-champion Virgil Akins, St. Louis, came up with his first impressive fight since he won the title two years ago with a surprise victory over 5th ranked Charley Scott. Akins scored heavily with a sharp left. He was in front all the way for a unanimous 10 round decision. There were no knockdowns and no clinches in a hard fight. Scott, a 23 year old Philadelphian seemed headed for a shot at Don Jordan's crown until he met Akins. Scott suffered a slight cut over his right eye." -Associated Press
