"Ralph Dupas was gleeful today over the prospect of a New York television bout on the strength of his workmanlike, unanimous decision over Virgil Akins. Dupas hooked and jabbed effectively at Akins during most of their 10 round bout before 3,086 spectators at Miami Beach Auditorium. Dupas opened a cut over Akins' left eye and also had him bleeding from the mouth in the 4th round. The crowd was standing at the slugging windup. In the power-punching sequences, as in the lighter exchanges, Ralph had the best of it. There were no knockdowns." -Associated Press
- Dupas stated after the match that he had a promise from Madison Square Garden that if he fought well against Akins, he would have a January 6th date with Gaspar Ortega in the Garden. He did not receive the January 6th date, but he did receive a February date in the Garden with contender Charley Scott.
