"Japan's Koichi Wajima retained his WBA junior middleweight championship by punishing Italy's Silvano Bertini so severely he could not answer the bell for the 13th round Tuesday night. There were no knockdowns in the scheduled 15-round bout before Wajima found himself alone in the ring for the 13th round. The two sluggers boxed on almost even terms in the first four rounds, then Wajima ran into trouble in the 5th when Bertini seemed to catch Wajima off-guard a couple of times. But after that Wajima was not in trouble and scored wicked right and left blows to Bertini's head which had Bertini groggy when the bell sounded the end of the 12th." -Associated Press
- Both fighters were cut over the right eye in the 4th round.
Post-fight comment
- "I told my manager I lost my fighting spirit at the end of the 12th round. The corn on the sole of my right foot began paining me and my right hand had swollen up." -Silvano Bertini
