  • Date: 1968-11-29

  • The 37 year old middleweight Sugar Boy Nando from Aruba made one last try to mingle with the world elite when he fought the strong American Freddie Little in Rome. The fight was an unofficial semi-finale to the vacant World Light Middelweight title. Freddie Little had stopped World Champ Sandro Mazzinghi on cuts one month before, but ringside officials ruled it a Non Contest. Mazzinghi was then stripped of his title by the WBA and WBC.

Nando was knocked down by a hook to the head in the 3rd, got up at 8 and continued, apparently unhurt. A second hook decked him moments later, this time the referee stopped the affair.

Little went on to win the World title in a bout with Stanley Hayward. Nando was back in the ring one year later, at the age of 39, losing on points to Dutch hope Joop Kruis. He retired with a verified 64-40-6 record.
