"Lightweight contender Ralph Dupas gained support for a shot at the title with a rare shutout last night over Joe Miceli of New York. Dupas, 142 1/4, had an easy time defeating the rugged Miceli, 145, in the scheduled 10-rounder. Dupas was lighter than Miceli, but his vaunted speed more than offset the New Yorker's advantage. Dupas scored repeatedly with long rights that shook up the slower moving Miceli and had his opponent backing up in the later rounds, Miceli slipped to the canvas in the 6th, but it was not ruled a knockdown. Miceli tried vainly for a knockout with his highly-touted left hook in the late rounds, but Dupas avoided close quarters and piled up points with his elusive hit and run tactics." -Associated Press

  • This was Dupas' first fight in New Orleans since the Louisiana Boxing Commission gave him temporary approval to fight in the State while the court conducting hearings in the question of his race was in recess. Louisiana segregation laws at the time did not permit White and Black competition in sports.
