"Ralph Dupas was forced to battle for his high-ranking last night in gaining a unanimous 10-round decision over newcomer Guy Sumlin. Dupas, the world's 5th-ranked welterweight from New Orleans, had all he could manage from Sumlin. Dupas started slowly but was shaken out of the dancing, bobbing routines he likes by the stiff counter-punching of the previously undefeated Alabama welterweight champion. Both fighters were cut. Dupas opened up a cut over Sumlin's left eye in the 3rd round and reopened it in every following round, but Sumlin, who refused to give ground to the fast punching speedster, sliced Dupas in about the same place in a furious 9th round." -United Press International
