Ray Miller vs. Tommy Grogan (2nd meeting)
Ray Miller 130 lbs beat Tommy Grogan 133 lbs by PTS in round 10 of 10
- Date: 1929-02-01
- Location: Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, USA
- Referee: Elmer 'Slim' McClelland
"Chicago lightweight, Ray Miller, was awarded the decision over Omaha's Tommy Grogan, at the end of their 10-round bout here last night. Grogan, knocked out by Miller in four rounds three weeks ago, got the cheers, but referee Elmer (Slim) McCleland's verdict went to the Chicagoan. When McCleland raised Miller's right hand the crowd booed its disapproval. The match was far from a duplicate of their previous thrilling encounter. They fought cautiously last night and the bout, except in two or three spots, was devoid of thrills. Grogan made a sensational finish in the 10th, however, pounding Miller around the ring with only feeble resistance from the Chicagoan. This finish evidently convinced the crowd that he was entitled to the verdict, or at least a draw." -Associated Press
- Scotty Monteith, matchmaker for the Olympia Arena, was hoping to close a deal for a title fight for Miller against lightweight champ Sammy Mandell at the Olympia. However, Miller took a beating in his next bout to previous victim Jimmy McLarnin, which scrubbed any thoughts of a title fight for Miller.
