"Former welterweight champion Virgil Akins scored a 10th round TKO over T.J. Jones Monday night in the feature bout at Marigold Gardens. Dr. Irving Slott of the Illinois Athletic Commission examined Jones' left eye, which was almost completely closed, at the end of the 9th round and refused to allow the bout to continue. Slott also said he found Jones was showing signs of exhaustion. Akins, at 154, was content in the early rounds to bob and weave, throwing an occasional punch or jab as the 152 pound Jones tried to force the fight. Akins, however, let loose with brief flurries toward the end of each round." -United Press International

• The two judges and referee Bernie Weissman all had Akins ahead on their cards when the bout was stopped.
