Tony DeMarco 146 lbs beat Wallace Bud Smith 142 lbs by TKO at 0:44 in round 9 of 10

  • Date: 1956-03-05
  • Location: Boston Garden, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
  • Referee: Jimmy McCarron

"Power-punching Tony DeMarco, the leading welter contender, battered lightweight king Wallace 'Bud' Smith in the 8th round at Boston Garden last night after forcing the Cincinnati boy to drop his guard with a smashing left hook to the stomach. It took the Boston belter just 43 seconds of the 9th round to continue his barrage at a pace which caused Smith's corner to throw in the towel and referee Jimmy McCarron to call a halt to the scheduled non-title 10 rounder. DeMarco recovered from a 1st round knockdown and had his opponent on the canvas in the 3rd when he couldn't finish the job. Between DeMarco's wildness and Smith's cuteness, Tony was looking rusty and quite unlike his old self until he began turning his vaunted left hooks to Smith's mid-section in the 7th round." -Associated Press

  • "He caught me by surprise with that shot in the 1st round. But I was alright. I need the work to build up my wind. That's the only thing that bothered me. Otherwise I felt good." -Tony DeMarco
