Ring doctor stopped the bout because Bratton was cut over both eyes and appeared "dazed and didn't know where he was."
"After going down for a 1st-round count of eight, Del Flanagan rebounded Thursday night to score a TKO over Johnny Bratton and toss a roadblock into the Chicago welterweight's comeback path. Flanagan, weighing 152 1/2, and with his ire aroused after the early knockdown, poured a barrage of left jabs and right uppercuts into the 147 1/2-pound Bratton. Flanagan opened a cut over Bratton's left eye in the 2nd round and the optic continued swelling until it was closed at the TKO. Before the fight was stopped, Flanagan held a generous point margin on cards of the three officials. He absorbed numerous blows himself but appeared unhurt at the finish. Dr. Joseph McCarthy, Minnesota boxing commission physician, ordered the scrap halted in the 9th when he found Bratton's eyes cut and dilated."
- This was reported as St. Paul's largest turnout for a fight since World War II.
