Bout Summary
Rivera scored a flash knockdown at the very end of Round Six with a left uppercut, the first time Berto has been knocked down in his career. Berto was then given much more than a minute's rest before Round Seven started when a new glove and tape was put on his right hand, allowing him to recuperate from the knockdown. Rivera sustained a bad cut below his right eye by a left hook near the end of Round Seven--apparently opening an old cut that had opened nine months earlier in his previous bout. His eye continued to bleed throughout Round Eight. Round Nine started a bit late as the ring doctor examined Rivera's eye to determine if he could continue. But the cut continued bleeding throughout that round as well. The final stanza saw Rivera turn southpaw a little while, and then both boxers slugging it out toe-to-toe at the end. ESPN Analyst Teddy Atlas scored the bout 98-91 for Berto.
