Jones appeared in control throughout, but through aggressiveness the San Francisco Chronicle gave Marino four rounds. Marino was knocked down in the 6th round, with the bell ringing with the count at eight. In the 10th round, coming out of a clinch; Jones landed a series of lefts and rights, followed by a right cross that floored Marino. Marino just failed to beat the count.


"Gorilla Jones, Akron, Ohio, today still held the NBA middleweight title by virtue of a knockout over Babe Marino, San Francisco, in the last round of their 10-round bout. Jones placed the belt which he retained after his recent NBA suspension, at stake in the battle with Marino here last night. Jones carried the lead throughout most of the contest, dazzled his opponent with clever boxing and accurate hitting and topped his performance off with the finishing punch, a looping right to the jaw. Marino set an aggressive pace but the flashy Jones was too shifty to be caught and Marino's blows were lost in the air." -Associated Press

• Marino was down for the count of '7' in the 6th round from a right to the jaw.
• The suspension the AP report mentioned was from Jones' previous bout against NYSAC middleweight champion Ben Jeby. Officially it was for engaging in a bout that did not meet with official NBA approval. But both Jones and Jeby were called for stalling during the bout and the bout was ruled a No Contest with both fighters receiving a suspension.
