"Chico Vejar, 152 1/4, of Stamford, Conn., won an upset unanimous 10-round decision over Vince Martinez, 149 1/2, of Paterson, N.J. last night in MSG. Using a combination body and head attack, Vejar won by a fair margin over the rangier Martinez in an excellent bout that was televised and broadcast nationally. Chico missed his cues last night in the 3rd and 7th rounds when he suffered batterings. But otherwise he stuck pretty well to his prepared script. His solid left jabs to the stomach kept Vince off balance and pulled down his guarding arms in most rounds; and his left hooks to the body jack-knifed Vince twice in the 4th round, and once in the 10th. Martinez made the mistake of trying to lead too much on Vejar. However, it seemed in the 7th he would win on a KO over Chico. He had Chico practically out on his feet against the ropes and later groggy in a corner. But in those desperate tries for a kayo, Martinez seemed to punch himself out. He was nearly exhausted in the remaining three rounds." -United Press

- "Sure, I'll fight him again. Winning this bout, which I was expected to lose, gave me a lot of confidence. I licked Vince Martinez with my improved body attack tonight and I can do it again." -Chico Vejar
