Notes

Bout Summary

Jones came out and took the opening round, working behind a good jab and looking for opportunities to move in quickly and land the right hand. An accidental clash of heads opened a gash on Jones's right cheek early in the 1st Round. Just as Round 2 began, Jones landed a stiff jab that knocked back McKinney's head and a followup combination that may have momentarily hurt the challenger. McKinley gathered himself quickly though and found success with a jab of his own and several right hands as the two were in close. Jones turned up his output in the final minute of the round landing with power shots. In Round 3, Jones landed a right hook that wobbled McKinney and flurry that caused him to take a knee at 1:34. He remained on one knee, telling his corner he was alright, before making it to his feet at the count of eight. Following the knockdown, Jones came forward throwing wide power shots and looking for the knockout. Despite taking some good shots, McKinney stood in there and traded punches as Jones became visibly winded. In Round 4, McKinney came out and repeatedly connected with clean right hands against Jones who either from punches or punching himself out was step slower. A right hand at the 1:30 mark wobbled the legs of Jones. Seconds later, Jones went to the mat following another right hand, but it was ruled to be from a push. A thudding short right hand caught Jones flush on the chin as the two exchanged in the final minute of the round and sent him to the mat twisting his right knee awkwardly as he went down. He immediately got to a knee and made it to his feet at eight. As soon as the referee allowed action to continue, Jones, who was still terribly off balance, stumbled across the ring toward McKinney and fell to the mat. At that, the referee stepped in and waved an end to the bout with Jones in no condition to continue.

Quotes

  • "To all you young kids out there, hard work pays off. Work hard and God will give it to you... When he knocked me down I thought "he's gonna relax now" because he got me and that's what he did. He relaxed. He thought he had me but hey (raising his right fist) this right here ain't no joke boy." - Kennedy McKinney following the win
