Roberto Duran 119 lbs beat Carlos Mendoza 118 lbs by UD in round 4 of 4
Roberto Duran made his professional debut against Carlos Mendoza, a future fighter of note. On September 28, 1979, after twenty consecutive wins, Mendoza fought Wilfredo Gomez for the WBC Super Bantamweight Championship at Caesars Palace. Gomez, with his left eye badly swollen and his nose bleeding profusely, stopped Mendoza in the tenth round. On the same card, Duran defeated Zeferino Gonzalez by a ten-round unanimous decision.
- It was reported in the Panama fight result section of the June 1968 issue of Ring Magazine that Duran won a split decision over Mendoza.
