Gazeta UA, January 18, 2008
A boxing event in Magdeburg has just ended, in the main fight of which the undefeated Ukrainian heavyweight Alexander Dimitrenko met with a notable German boxer Timo Hoffman.
The fight turned out to be very intense and rich on action. From the very first round Dimitrenko went forward, throwing a large number of shots to the body. In the fourth round, Dimitrenko stepped up the pressure and twice sent Hoffmann to the floor, but Hoffmann was able to continue fighting and in the next, fifth round, he delivered an accurate right shot, knocking Dimitrenko down. Hoffman went for the knockout, but the Ukrainian boxer withstood and made the fight more even.
The second half of the fight was a competitive and hard-fought battle and both boxers had successful episodes, but in general, Dimitrenko had the upper hand. Finally, in the twelfth and final round, the Ukrainian managed to knock Hoffmann down three times, after which the referee intervened and stopped the fight, registering Dimitrenko's victory by technical knockout.
This was the first stoppage defeat in the long career of Timo Hoffmann.[1]
Dimitrenko Beats Timo Hoffmann By Technical Knockout
Der Spiegel, January 18, 2008
Timo Hoffmann lasted twelve rounds against Alexander Dimitrenko - until the referee stepped in. For the German it was the first knockout defeat of his career. He caused his opponent big problems and even sent the favorite to the canvas himself.
Hamburg - Dimitrenko defeated Hoffmann by technical knockout in the twelfth round and remained undefeated in his 27th professional fight. It was the 17th early win of the Ukrainian's career, as he retained the WBO Intercontinental heavyweight championship. For Hoffmann it was the sixth defeat in the 43rd fight - but the first by knockout.
"He surprised me," said Dimitrenko, who had big problems against Hoffmann and even went down in the fifth round. One round earlier he had sent the challenger to the canvas himself for the first time in the fight. The two fighters then exchanged blows for the majority of the fight before Dimitrenko started overwhelming Hoffmann towards the end.
In the twelfth round he attacked Hoffmann with a flurry of shots, prompting the referee to stop the fight just before the end of the round. When the verdict was announced, Dimitrenko was whistled at by the 3,500 spectators in Magdeburg because he had pushed Hoffmann down [which was followed by the referee stopping the fight]. The 25-year-old had also received a warning for this before. "I didn't do anything wrong," the winner defended himself in the post-fight interview. "It's boxing, it's a tough sport," said Dimitrenko.
Previously, Ina Menzer had successfully defended her featherweight world title. The 27-year-old WIBF title holder won against the Mexican Laura Serrano unanimously on points (97:93, 97:93, 98:92). It was the eighth successful title defense for the undefeated fighter from the Hamburg Universum boxing stable in 19 professional fights.[2]
