"Baby Arizmendi, Los Angeles, tonight slugged out a 10 round decision over Davey Day, Chicago, to win the first of a series of elimination bouts to select a challenger to Tony Canzoneri's lightweight crown. Arizmendi was awarded the decision, unpopular with the crowd of 3,500, on the strength of his aggressiveness, although the Chicago lad made a more scientific fight. Day, the better boxer of the pair, caught most of Arizmendi's punches on his elbows and shoulders and cut the Californian's face badly before the fight was over. Arizmendi made the better finish, however, and was awarded the decision on the strength of his carrying the fight." -United Press
