- The bout was for Woodhall's WBC super middleweight title, and Woodhall was originally scheduled to face mandatory challenger Vincenzo Nardiello. Promoter Don King had won a purse bid for the fight, which was scheduled to be held in Nardiello's home country of Italy, and Woodhall was reportedly due to receive a purse of about £400,000 for the fight. In the end, however, King decided not to stage the bout, leaving Woodhall's promoter to stage it in England with an accordingly reduced purse for Woodhall.

- Nardiello then withdrew from the bout, and Catley stepped in on twelve days' notice. Catley was inserted into the #10 spot in the WBC super middleweight rankings despite never having fought above 160 pounds before. His purse for the bout was reportedly £30,000.

- Woodhall admitted after the fight that he didn't believe he had deserved the decision, saying: "I was terrible....Glenn deserved it, I didn't. He was better than me on the night. My jab was miles away, and it was an awful performance."
