"Canastota's Billy Backus, 147 1/2, got a split decision over Percy Pugh, 145, of New Orleans, in a rousing, hotly disputed 12 round main bout at the War Memorial Auditorium. Pugh, with much faster hands and not bothered by Backus' southpaw style in the early going, had all the best of it in the first half of the 12 rounder. After that, however, Backus started to come strong, and his heavier punches obviously scored big with the officials. Although Backus was a constant aggressor, Pugh circled to Billy's left, away from Backus' power punch, and jabbed Backus almost at will for most of the first six rounds. Pugh slowed after the midpoint of the bout and this gave Backus an opportunity to land some solid shots. There were no knockdowns." -Syracuse Post-Standard
