Billy Backus 147 lbs beat Manuel Gonzalez 151 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Billy Backus won a unanimous 10 round decision over the welterweight's top contender Manny Gonzalez in the War Memorial ring last night. Backus didn't waste any time going to work. He came out with the big stuff in the 1st round, scoring heavily on rights to the head and shoulders and solid lefts to the body. After taking three good lefts, Gonzalez began moving away, trying to avoid the body attack. At the 41 second mark of the 2nd round, Backus caught the Odessa, Tex., native on his heels and sent him to the canvas with a sharp left to the mid-section. The lightning quick veteran pummelled Backus in the 4th with both hands, and found the key to countering Billy's body attack. Gonzalez won the middle rounds, scoring with right hands to the head, one of which opened a cut below Billy's left eye in the 5th round. In a fast and furious 10th round, Backus brought in all of the artillery and shelled the slowing Gonzalez. Cuts appeared under both of the top contender's eyes as Backus hummed 'em home." -Syracuse Herald-Journal

  • Unofficial Syracuse Herald-Journal scorecard - 5-3-2 Backus

  • "He's a smart fighter and a heck of a puncher. Those right hands were coming in funny. Instead of coming straight at you, they kind of hooked." -Billy Backus
  • "I had an operation on my right elbow to take out bone chips. Because of that I can't straighten it out. It's not really a straight right, but more of a hook." -Manny Gonzalez.
