"Billy Backus pounded out a bloody TKO over Irish Pat Murphy in the 7th round of a scheduled 10 rounder here Saturday night. Backus pressed the fight all the way and was ahead on points when the bout was stopped. Murphy showed heart in his first fight against a lefthander. There was one knockdown when Backus' right hand sent Murphy to the canvas in the 3rd, but he was up at the count of two. Both fighters drew blood in the 6th round. Between rounds, referee Jack Milicich halted the fight because of a severe cut over Murphy's right eye." -United Press International
