"European welterweight champion Roger Menetrey, 145, of France won a 12-round majority decision Monday night over former world champ Billy Backus, 146 1/4, of Syracuse, N.Y. The Frenchman landed a number of hard lefts to the head in the early rounds, causing puffiness on Backus' cheeks. Menetrey seemed to gain an advantage in the 9th round after an even fight until that point. However, the 30 year old American almost floored Menetrey with a tremendous right hand during a rally in the 11th round. Some in the slim crowd of 2,000 at the Palais des Sports booed the decision." -Associated Press
