"Lightweight Len Matthews of Philadelphia fought his way a step closer to a possible shot at champion Joe Brown's title Friday night when he took a 10-round decision from 4th-ranked Johnny Gonsalves. Matthews was a 7-5 favorite at the outset of the match and proved the odds correct when he rocked the wily veteran from Oakland, Calif., several times with rights and lefts to the head after softening up Gonsalves' mid-section. Matthews had his best round in the 7th, when he backed Gonsalves into his own corner and pounded the Oakland boxer for fully a minute." -United Press
