The preliminary bout was between Charles Kelly, of Cincinnati, and Jack Ward, of Newark, N. J. It was six rounds. In the first five rounds neither did any damage, the go being very slow. Ward was much the cleverer and he made a good appearance in his hitting in the last round, but the set-to was very tame. It was declared by the referee a draw, and by the spectators a disappointment.
