  • Newspaper decision for Petrolle from Duluth Herald, Fargo Forum.

"Sammy Mandell, world's lightweight champion, has felt the wrath of the pile-driving fists of Billy Petrolle, the 'Fargo Express.' After more than two year's negotiations by boxing promoters, the two met in a 10-round no-decision match last night and while the champion carried off a newspaper verdict, he came within an ace of being knocked out in the 8th round when Petrolle caught him flush on the jaw with a terrific right hand. Because of his earlier advantage and his rally in the last two rounds, a majority of newspapermen gave him the decision. Until the 8th round, Mandell boxed so cleverly that Petrolle was unable to penetrate his defense while the champion dug several hard punches to his opponent's head and body. Then the 8th came and Petrolle landed the punch that nearly ended the fight. Mandell bobbed and weaved his way clear throughout the rest of the round." -Associated Press
