Smoker and Sparring Match.
The Avon Club, corner Baltimore street and Central avenue, gave a smoker last night that eclipsed any of its previous efforts. The club-house was packed with members of the Monday Club, the Handsome Young Men's Club, the Baltimore Cycle Club and other invited guests. John U. Johns, William Scully, John Flemming, W. J. Healy, A. Jenkins, George Horst and others gave musical selections. Thomas McNulty, soloist, and David Williamson, humorist, also entertained the audience. The committee in charge of the entertainment was H. R. Lauderman, chairman, James E. Griggs, Charles H. Collins, B. F. Row, Charles Stork, George W. Mann and James Curran.
A six-round sparring match between Wm. Jones and Joseph Gant, colored light-weights, evoked much interest. In the first round the spectators were convinced that Jones was a novice, and Gant was a pronounced victor. Jones had the strength and the endurance and gave Gant his head for a target every round. Still Gant was not efficient enough to put his opponent out. At the end of the sixth round Jones refused to respond to the call of time, and the referee gave the fight to Gant. W. Harvy and E. Folger were judges and Chas. H. Collins, timer.
