Joe Gans beat John Coates by PTS in round 11 of 10
- Date: 1895-02-11
- Location: Monumental Theatre, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Gans Defeats Coats.
Joseph Gans, the champion colored light-weight of Baltimore, defeated John Coats, a colored light-weight of Washington, D. C., at the Monumental tournament-room last night in eleven rounds. Both men were scientific, Gans being slightly the superior, while Coats was a shade the stronger and had the greater reach.
While the sixth round was being fought things looked bad for the Baltimore man. In the ninth Coats showed signs of tiring, and in the tenth Coats's legs weakened, while Gans went in and got the decision.
The extra round was ordered, as many spectators thought the decision should have been for a draw. In this round the referee decided that Gans had landed two blows more than his opponent.
