- Corbett was knocked down twice in the 7th and twice in the 8th. After he went down without being hit on the final knockdown, the referee stopped the bout.
"Fred Apostoli holds today at least half of the world's middleweight championship, the reward for his 8th round TKO of Young Corbett III, a fellow Californian, last night in MSG. Corbett, 33 years old and weary as time, sank down on one knee and gave up the ghost at 2:01 of the 8th. Apostoli kept trying to throw a right hand, and for the first three rounds he got nothing for his pains except a mouthful of leather. He did a little better in the 4th, and in the 5th he began scoring bulls-eyes on Corbett's chin. The veteran wilted rapidly, and by the close of the 6th he obviously was in bad shape, with both eyes cut. Early in the 7th Apostoli dug a left deep into Corbett's middle, and Corbett went down grimacing for a 9-count. Another flurry to the body put him down for eight before the round ended. Corbett barely came out for the 8th and Apostoli pounced on him and drove him to the canvas for a count of nine. He rose on sagging legs to meet another onslaught, but thought better of it and went back down, shaking his head. Referee Eddie Josephs motioned Apostoli to his corner and said that was enough." -Associated Press
- Hymie Caplan, manager of NBA middleweight champ Solly Krieger, stated that Solly would not be defending against Apostoli for some time due to having other engagements.
