Romeo Anaya beat Julio Guerrero by PTS in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1972-06-18
  • Location: Plaza de Toros San Roque, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico
  • "In a major upset, Mexican bantamweight champion Romeo Anaya, 121, Tuxtla Gutierrez, battled back from a two knockdown deficit to earn a points verdict over highly regarded Julio Guerrero, 120, Mexico City. Although the bout took place in Anaya's hometown of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Romeo's win was well deserved. Guerrero visited the canvas once himself in round nine, and both of Julio's eyes were closed at the finish. The local lad was unmarked, but manager Cristobal Rosas disclosed that a possible shoulder injury could keep Romeo out of action for a few weeks." -WORLD BOXING, October 1972 issue

    • This bout was considered an upset because Guerrero was the fighter being lined up for world champ Rafael Herrera's first title defense of his 118 lb. title.
