Brunson controlled the opening three rounds with quick, sharp punches from the outside, set up by his jab. However, Brunson began to tire in round four. Soriano began to back his opponent to the ropes, landing punches to the head and body. A weary Brunson appeared to be in very bad shape from Soriano's body attack, a round was scored 10-8 by two of three judges. Brunson was able to counter with sharp punches in the final round, but Soriano continued to pour on the pressure and outwork his opponent. The scorecards went three different ways, for a majority draw.
